Despite getting a STAB boost, Mud Shot is generally Groudon's least dangerous move due to its low power and lower comparative energy gains due to the way that Raid Bosses utilize Fast Moves.

On the intermediate side, Earthquake has high neutral damage and can be very threatening, but it's also relatively easy to dodge. Fire Blast and Solar Beam are also easy to dodge but weaker in neutral scenarios, but their saving grace is the fact that they can hit all three of the types that Groudon is weak to for Super Effective damage, so they can be very threatening.

Dragon Tail has high damage output and great neutral coverage, making it the most threatening Fast Move in Groudon's arsenal most of the time.

Overview

Groudon is a high-priority target with a lot of power behind it. Fortunately, as a Raid Boss it's missing both Precipice Blades and Fire Punch, both of which could genuinely be threatening, so it's not a terribly hard raid overall. Your best bet is to see what the recommended counters are when joining the raid in order to try to figure out what Charged Move it's packing. Groudon has coverage for all three types that it's weak to, and even a dodged Super Effective damage can leave large dents, while a direct hit can one-hit-KO just about anything, even at full health.

That said, Groudon's Charged Moves aren't hard to dodge, so be vigilant and it shouldn't be much of an issue most of the time. It can also help to have teams of multiple types at the ready in order to better counter this behemoth of the earth. And even then, a large enough raid group should be able to flat-line Groudon without much care.

Approach

  • Groudon is weak to Water, Grass, and Ice.
    • Water is generally the strongest option, as it sports some massively powerful Pokemon. Just note that Solar Beam is arguably Groudon's best Charged Move, so care should be taken when choosing your team.
    • Grass has a few blazingly fast counters, and the advantage of resisting Solar Beam and Earthquake. Add to that the fact that Fire Blast is arguably Groudon's weakest Charged Move when attacking as a Raid boss, and Grass generally holds a strong defensive niche as well.
    • Ice is hard-pressed to keep up with Water and Grass, but the top Ice Types can still genuinely pose a threat.

Dodging Strategy

Since the most recent update to the Raid system, dodging has become something of an enigma, so it isn't necessarily a good idea to attempt it at the moment. Still, some players seem to have no issue with the new dodging system, so it's definitely a good idea to dodge Groudon's Charged Moves if you're comfortable with it.

Note on Counters

As of right now, we still don't fully have resources to precisely work out how various Pokemon will actually perform after the raid system update. To this end, please note that while we are generally confident in the viability of this list, the exact placement of the Pokemon contained is definitely up for debate.

Groudon teambuilding should really be "prepare two teams: Water types for non-Solarbeam raids, and Grass types for Solarbeam raids". The boss charge move should be predicted easily from the suggested battle party in the raid lobby. This makes Solarbeam raids waaaay easier, making EQ much harder and even somewhat risky when trying to pull a Duo off. Kartana tanks those beams like a pro, with many other double-resistors like shadow Venu, MSceptile, Roserade.

I would use the same Water team for EQ groudon bc the suggested battle party is not that different to the one for Fire Blast raids, also bc Shadow Gyarados performs greatly in both those scenarios.

It's not worth to have a mixed team ready to face every move Groudon can have: it's a 2/3 odds that half your team can (and will) go down without even using a charge move. Just don't bring Grass to a Fire Blast groudon, and don't bring Water to a Solarbeam groudon ;)
