PvE Analysis

Thanks to its excellent overall stats, Metagross is a wonderful all-rounder choice in Max Battles. Whether you want to fire off a Max Attack or defend/support your team with Max Guard, Metagross can flexibly adapt to either role much better than most Pokemon in the early metagame. Metagross is also a contender to remain useful in the Dynamax meta, as well. While it does have to worry about Gigantamax formes of Melmetal and Copperajah in the future (Duraludon and Corviknight don't have Steel Type G-Max moves), it will likely always retain utility as a Steel Type Dynamax for the foreseeable future, and as of right now it's also a good Max Mindstorm user as well.

Metagross's one downside is its lack of Fast Attacks with a 0.5s duration that doesn't turn into Max Flutterby, so it isn't amazing at charging up the Max Meter. When Metagross is defending its team with Max Guard, its teammates should try to make use of glass cannons that can charge up the Max Meter quickly.

Best Dynamax Moveset

Bullet Punch + Meteor Mash*Offensive
Zen Headbutt + Psychic*Offensive
Fury Cutter + (Any)Offensive
Fury Cutter + (Any)Defensive
  • Bullet Punch is obviously the main move of choice if you're going for Steel Type Dynamax offense. Meteor Mash doesn't REALLY matter due to the fact that Metagross won't really be using its Charged Move over Max Steelspike, but it's still an option.
  • Zen Headbutt is the way to go for Psychic damage. In a similar story to Steel, you'll be going for Max Mindstorm over Psychic.
  • If you want to go for some Bug Type damage, then stick with Fury Cutter to drop Max Flutterby.
  • For a more supportive build, Fury Cutter is the way to go for its ability to build up Max Move energy faster, thus letting it use Max Guard/Max Spirit more frequently

PvP Analysis

In terms of PvP performance, Dynamax Pokemon are virtually identical to their non-Dynamax counterparts, except for the fact that Dynamax Metagross doesn't have access to Return.
