PvE Analysis

Gengar was the first Ghost Type Dynamax Pokemon, and it can definitely put in numbers. Its relatively low TDO can be a bit of a liability in this game mode, especially when it's hunting down its fellow Ghosts and taking Ghost moves as well. Still, it's unlikely that we'll see much big competition for Dynamax Gengar in the near future... except for Gigantamax Gengar, so be ready for that.

...which got released merely a little over a week after Dynamax Gengar's release, so regular Dynamax Gengar's just plain outclassed now. However, Dynamax Gengar remains a strong option for those unable to get their hands on a Gigantamax Gengar, and it has the TEENY TINY advantage of being able to utilize Max Darkness instead of a Ghost Type Max Move.... so that's nice once every couple of years or so.

It's also worth noting that a Dynamax or Gigantamax Gengar can also be used for Mega Gengar in normal raids, so there's a fair bit of role compression potential here.

Best Dynamax Movesets

  • Lick and Shadow Claw both have STAB and quickly generate energy, making both ideal moves on offense or defense.
  • Sucker Punch works if you're dead-set on using Max Darkness instead.
  • Either works when you're running defense... though Dynamax Gengar isn't great at this job due to how frail it is.

PvP Analysis

In terms of PvP performance, Dynamax Pokemon are virtually identical to their non-Dynamax counterparts, though Dynamax Gengar can't learn Return.
