Pokemon Legends Z-A: The Potential for Other New Mega Evolutions

Speculation on Other Mega Evolutions that May or May Not Be Likely
Post Banner

We've already covered what we feel are the top 10 (or so) Most Likely Mega Evolutions for Pokemon Legends Z-A, but is that really where the list should end? Is "likely" really a good metric for judging what The Pokemon Company may do in the future? If we look at precedent, we have things like Mega Audino, Pulverizing Pancake, and Gigantamax Kingler that tells us that we tend to get some really unexpected things with each new generation. For that reason, we're going to look at a few more Pokemon that may end up seeing Mega Evolutions for various reasons!

As stated in the previous article: Note that “leaks” are all over the internet right now, confirming/deconfirming different features for the game. However, every single Pokemon game is always buzzing with leaks along these lines pre-release, so we respectfully ask that they’re not referenced in the comments. For now, the only thing that this article is based on is raw speculation, so please take all of this with a grain of salt.

Even More Possible Mega Evolutions

Flygon

Flygon is a fan-favorite for Mega Evolution. Among many groups, it’s the #1 answer if you ask “which Pokemon deserved to get a Mega Evolution in Generation 6?”, and has a lot of fan support. If everything goes well, we could very well finally have our Bug/Dragon Type Pokemon that players have been asking for for years, and maybe a Bug Type Mega Evolution to dethrone Mega Heracross. However, The Pokemon Company also has a very bad track-record for doing things that actually make their fans happy, so this one is very much up in the air as of now.

Zygarde

Despite being exceptionally note-worthy due to representing the “Z” in Pokemon Legends Z-A, Zygarde (50% Forme)… likely won’t get a Mega Evolution. We already have precedent for Mega Rayquaza being the progenitor of the Mega Evolution phenomenon (though there’s definitely wiggle room for some retconning), and Zygarde doesn’t really need a Mega Evolution… though a Mega Zygarde (Complete Forme) is an extremely scary prospect!

We may see something unique and new done with Zygarde in Z-A, but keep in mind that Arceus didn’t see any new features added for its unique game… aside from the absolutely frightening Legend Plate. More than anything, I’d imagine that we’ll see a means to keep Zygarde in its Complete forme even without hitting the prerequisite 50% HP. All-in-all, we probably won’t see any changes to Zygarde that will make major waves in Pokemon Go. Though the Complete fome also has those unexplained Red and Blue features in its design that seem to correspond with Xerneas and Yveltal; Life and Death…..

Kommo-o, Dragapult, Baxcalibur

We already have the other Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon listed, so why not this trio? These three have the least thematic reasons to be given Mega Evolutions, but they are definitely far from off the table. They all have the potential to be strong, but they also have some issues that must be addressed when it comes to looking at their Pokemon Go potential. First of all, these are all Dragons, so they're all competing with (and losing to) Mega Rayquaza, so they're going to need to compete in their sub-types. Kommo-o has to compete with Mega Lucario as a Fighting Type, so that's an uphill battle. Dragapult has to contend with Mega Gengar, which is another struggle. Finally, Baxcalibur has an Ice sub-type and amazing Ice Type moves, so a Mega Baxcalibur could become the new top Ice Type Mega Evolution pretty easily.

The Eeveelutions

This one is, admittedly, not extremely likely. Gamefreak seems extremely protective of Eevee and its various final forms, so adding Mega Evolutions into the mix could really mess up their plans for the future. Still, Eevee and its Eeveelutions are always extremely popular, and Sylveon has the distinction of standing as the mascot of the Fairy Type that was released in Kalos. For this reason, a Mega Sylveon seems like it may be possible if you squint hard enough, with the other Eeveelutions less so.

Meganium, Typhlosion, & Feraligatr

Honestly, this could apply to any of the remaining Starters, but Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr get special mention as we have Generation 1 and 3 Starter Mega Evolutions, so filling in the Generation 2 starters seem like a no-brainer, especially since this is one of only two trios of final-form starters that retain their classical mono-typings, meaning they could pair with any other types pretty well, or simply stay mono-type.

Butterfree

Mega Beedrill exists, so its counterpart seems at least somewhat likely to fulfill some form of dichotomy. And since Mega Beedrill kept its Bug/Poison Typing, a Mega Butterfree would probably get to stay Bug/Flying. However, Beedrill also has a fair number of Psychic Type moves, so maybe Bug/Psychic would work well in this case, or they could also lean into its toxic wing-scales and make it Bug/Poison like Mega Beedrill.

Kabutops & Omastar

Mega Aerodactyl became a thing, so why not the other Kanto fossils? Well, Aerodactyl was a bit of a unique case in all fairness, as it’s the lone fossil that stands out from the other fossils within its own generation. Still, seeing one or two of these ancient Pokemon get a Mega Evolution would be fun… praise Helix.

Electric & Ice Types

Ice and Electric are currently the two rarest Mega Evolution types, with a mere two Pokemon representing each type. For this reason, it seems likely that we’ll see at least one or two Pokemon of each type in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

Any Number of Random Pokemon

Mega Audino, Mega Beedrill, Mega Slowbro... While most Mega Evolutions are based on extremely note-worthy Pokemon, a few of them seem a bit out-of-the-blue. For this reason, we can probably expect a number of outright random Pokemon to get new Mega Evolutions. Honestly, the sky really is the limit here, though hopefully we’ll see some Pokemon from Generation 6, 7, 8, and 9 represented. In particular, here's hoping that Niantic does Kalos some real justice by not entirely snubbing the region that introduced Mega Evolution when it comes to new Mega Evolutions again!

Also; Mega Kricketune. We need the Mega Evolution echo added to "deedle deedle deedle WOOOOOP!".
