PvE Analysis

Huntail is often overlooked as a Pokemon, and with good reason. Aqua Tail is a nice get, but 197 Atk is not quite viable. There exist numerous superior alternatives. Huntail shares its Atk stat and typing with Octillery, another underachiever.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

Water Gun + Aqua TailBest
  • Water Gun is superior to Bite for damage due to STAB.

  • Aqua Tail, Huntail’s only STAB charge move, does the most damage overall.

  • Ice Beam and Crunch are ineffective on Huntail with its low stats.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

Watergun or Bite + Ice Beam or Aqua TailBest
  • Water Gun and Bite are very close, but Bite slightly wins out because it isn't resisted by Grass-type counters.

  • Ice Beam has counter coverage while Crunch has more bars and fair neutral coverage.

  • Aqua Tail has its advantages, but it's weak and resisted by Grass.

PvP Analysis

Water Gun + Aqua Tail and Crunch or Ice BeamBest

Water Gun is preferable over Bite thanks to STAB and better energy generation. Aqua Tail is Huntail's STAB move, as well as being cheap and spammy for solid offensive pressure. Pair that with Crunch to maximize Huntail's coverage, though Ice Beam is potentially viable to hit the Ice-types that would otherwise threaten it.

Great League

Huntail's unimpressive bulk really does it no favors in Great League. Combine that with the fact that this is a format flush with incredibly powerful Water-types, and you'll see that Huntail just doesn't have the power level to cut it here.

Ultra League

Second verse, same as the first. Huntail just isn't good enough to bring out in Ultra League.

Master League

Huntail's low max CP prevents it from competing with the top threats of the Master League format.
