PvE Analysis

Shadow Houndoom is a very strong Dark Type attacker, and an okay Fire Type attacker. And honestly, not much else can be said. When its types are synergetic with one another, it can definitely be a top choice, but do keep in mind that its low bulk can easily hamstring its performance.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

  • Snarl and Foul Play make Shadow Houndoom a formidable Dark Type attacker
  • Fire Fang and Flamethrower make Shadow Houndoom a usable Fire Type attacker
  • When both of its types are Super Effective, Fire Fang and Foul Play bring out maximum DPS.
  • Crunch and Fire Blast are less powerful options.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

  • Fire Fang has the highest power, making it the superior choice in general
  • Snarl is weak on defense
  • Crunch comes out early and frequently, making it the move of choice.
  • Flamethrower and Foul Play are both usable
  • Fire Blast is far too slow to be viable

PvP Analysis

Fire Fang is generally preferred over Snarl as Houndoom is too fragile to fire off Charged Attacks repeatedly. Best it can do is deal consistent, high Fire-type damage while it hides behinds shields.

Crunch is Houndoom's cheapest attack; its occasional debuffs can help improve Fire Fang's damage over the course of its matchups. Flamethrower is a middling move, but it is Houndoom's cheapest Fire-type attack. Fire Blast is too expensive. Return can provide coverage against the rare few Pokemon that resist Fire + Dark, but it is extremely unreliable. Foul Play has the same stats as Crunch but lacks the debuff chance.

Great League1.5 / 5

During near GO Battle League's beginnings, Shadow Houndoom saw a niche, albeit gimmicky use as a relentless source of Fire-type damage to melt down tanky Steels and Grasses alike. Since then, other Fire-type Pokemon have been greatly buffed, and many can perform what Houndoom once did but with greater flexibility. There isn't really much reason to use Houndoom nowadays when Pokemon like Skeledirge and Talonflame are simply much better options

Ultra League1 / 5

It's really not good here. Though its Dark typing gives it play against Giratina, it is far too fragile to actually defeat the titan. Things only get worse for Houndoom if Giratina is carrying Ancient Power.

Master League0 / 5

Houndoom lacks sufficient stats for Master League.
