PvE Analysis

Clodsire is a very popular, and legitimately fun Pokemon... but oh boy it's bad in PvE. This is an easy skip if you're looking for raiders, and while it's not the worst defender, it's not worth the investment.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

Poison Sting + Sludge BombBest
Mud Shot + Earthquake
  • Go for either Poison Sting and Sludge Bomb, or Mud Shot and Earthquake.
  • Stone Edge, Acid Spray, Surf, and Megahorn are all worthless here.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

Poison Sting or Mud Shot + Sludge BombBest
  • Poison Sting is about the same as Mud Shot in performance
  • Sludge Bomb has an early damage window, but using it alongside Poison Sting leaves Clodsire easily countered.
  • Earthquake, Stone Edge, Acid Spray, Water Pulse, and Megahorn* all fall behind.

PvP Analysis

Poison Sting + Earthquake and Sludge Bomb or Stone Edge

After the move updates in Pokemon GO: Max Out, Poison Sting is superior to Mud Shot. Both moves deal the same damage, but Poison Sting offers more energy generation

Earthquake is Clodsire's most powerful attack; although it is expensive, Clodsire's incredible bulk allows it to utilize the move consistently. Sludge Bomb is a secondary STAB option and also serves as Clodsire's cheapest Charged Attack; it provides overall good coverage when combined with Earthquake. Stone Edge lacks STAB, but it can break through Flying-type Pokemon. The Community Day Charged Attack Megahorn can be used in certain rulesets, but its coverage in general isn't too great. Water Pulse is useless.

Great League5 / 5

Clodsire is extremely tanky, boasting bulkiness that is comparable to that of Registeel and Azumarill. While it lacks good Fast Attack pressure, it can consistently reach its fairly expensive Charged Attacks to overwhelm opponents. A wide array of coverage afforded by Earthquake and either Stone Edge or Sludge Bomb ensures that only a few Pokemon can handle it safely. Additionally, its rare Poison/Ground typing allows it to resist Registeel's Zap Cannon and Focus Blast, making Clodsire one of the few safe counters to the titan.

With that said, Clodsire does have its fair share of weaknesses. Weaknesses to Water, Ice, Ground, and Psychic can give Clodsire a difficult time against major meta threats such as Alolan Sandslash, Dewgong, and Feraligatr, though Clodsire can still deal significant damage to them.

Ultra League3 / 5

Clodsire doesn't hit the CP cap of the Ultra League, but its stat product is not terrible, being comparable to that of Nidoqueen's. Unfortunately, that also means there isn't too much reason to use Clodsire over Nidoqueen, whose access to cheaper Charged Attacks and Poison Jab makes it a much more reliable option.

Master League0 / 5

In the main series, Clodsire can remain somewhat usable in high-powered metagames by utilizing a combination of its bulk, wide array of supporting moves, reliable recovery, and good abilities. However, that is not an option in Pokemon GO, which strongly favors more direct combat.
