PvE Analysis

Skeledirge isn't the strongest Fire Type starter, or the best Ghost Type attacker. Basically, it CAN work in both of its types, but it falls short on both sides. Still, if you're just starting out with your raiding team, it can be a solid budget option... though Chandelure is better.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

  • Incinerate and Blast Burn* is the moveset of choice, as it grants Skeledirge a STAB Fire Type moveset.
    • Torch Song is a viable alternative for those who are unable to get Blast Burn. It is a stronger option than Flamethrower.
  • If you want to use Skeledirge to counter Psychic or Ghost Types, then the moveset choice is Hex and Shadow Ball.
  • Crunch, Bite, and Disarming Voice are ultimately inferior.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

  • Incinerate is one of the best defensive Charged Moves in the game, and is the move of choice here.
  • Bite is inferior.
  • Incinerate is best paired with Crunch for its great neutral coverage, low energy cost, and good damage output.
  • Dazzling Gleam is also great, but it's far easier to dodge.
  • Shadow Ball has higher base power and STAB, but it comes out a bit less frequently and is pretty easy to dodge.
  • Flamethrower, Blast Burn, and Torch Song allows too many Pokemon to wall Skeledirge when paired with Incinerate, and isn't great by comparison to the other options.

PvP Analysis

Incinerate is an excellent Fast Attack, providing both good damage and energy generation despite its rather clunky duration. Bite is terrible.

Shadow Ball is Skeledirge's primary STAB option, sporting great coverage and DPE; it can be a bit expensive, however. Torch Song is a fairly cheap Charged Attack with decent DPE and a guaranteed Attack boost, transforming Skeledirge into a dangerous sweeping threat. Disarming Voice is an alternative option that provides Skeledirge with better coverage against Dragon- and Dark-type Pokemon. Flamethrower and Crunch aren't really worth running.

What about Blast Burn, Skeledirge's Community Day move? While the vast majority of starter Pokemon make use of their Community Day move, Skeledirge finds Blast Burn to be a rather situational choice. The primary reason is that Blast Burn's pacing does not synergize with Shadow Ball. Both Torch Song and Disarming Voice's 45 energy cost combine well with Shadow Ball's 55 energy cost for a total of 100 energy, fitting perfectly into 5 Incinerates. Blast Burn's 50 energy cost only synergizes well with itself and Skeledirge's 45 energy moves. In order to make the best use of Blast Burn, Skeledirge has to sacrifice Shadow Ball, weakening Skeledirge's coverage. Does this mean that Blast Burn is a bad choice? No - the move is still absurdly powerful, but it does have a real opportunity cost on Skeledirge.

Great League

Skeledirge possesses decent stats and a rare but increasingly common type combination. Most notably, Skeledirge can be compared to Alolan Marowak, who also possesses the same Fire/Ghost typing and has greater bulk. Alolan Marowak's strength is in the consistency of its damage output, but Skeledirge's superior energy generation and access to better Charged Attacks sets it apart.

The main factor holding Skeledirge back is the metagame's hostility towards it. Pokemon such as Drapion, Shadow Marowak, Sableye, Gastrodon, Mandibuzz and Feraligatr are common forces that stop Skeledirge in its tracks. While Skeledirge does possess the tools to deal significant damage to them, it can struggle due to its fairly slow pacing to its first attack (3 Incinerates, or 15 turns). However, Skeledirge's decent stats and wonderful moveset will allow it to shine from time to time whenever the metagame is kinder to it.

Ultra League

Skeledirge benefits from the lack of Alolan Marowak in this league. Unlike the other potential Fire/Ghost candidates, Skeledirge is moderately bulky and can fire off its Charged Attacks more consistently as a result. Many Ultra League staples struggle to break Skeledirge, such as Cobalion, Clefable, and Cresselia.

Master League

It has a higher stat product than Chandelure and can take over its role as a spicy corebreaker in Master League Premier Cup. Keep this away from Open Master League, however. Skeledirge can take on Charmers and wall Xerneas, but it's nothing that Ho-Oh cannot replicate.
