Qwilfish
PvE Analysis
Qwilfish is one of those Pokemon.... the type that... exists. Don't raise one.

- Water Gun can be paired with Aqua Tail to fulfill a Water-type role.
- Poison Sting can be paired with Sludge Wave to fulfill a Poison-type role.
- Ice Beam doesn't get STAB and is suboptimal to use offensively.
- Acid Spray and Fell Stinger aren't worth considering

- Ice Beam hits hard against Qwilfish's Grass-type counters.
- Aqua Tail has the earliest damage window and is more likely to be used before Qwilfish faints.
- Fell Stinger is also a solid option on defense.
- Acid Spray is for PvP.
PvP Analysis
Poison Sting + Aqua Tail and Sludge Wave |
---|
Poison Sting has amazing energy generation and is the preferred Fast Attack. Water Gun is not bad, but it is outclassed.
Aqua Tail sees frequent use on Qwilfish, being the most spammable charge move and allows Qwilfish to bait shields and apply shield pressure or decent STAB damage. Sludge Wave deals huge STAB Poison-type damage, and is reasonably reachable thanks to Poison Sting's energy gain. Ice Beam can provide coverage against Dragon-type Pokemon, but is generally not recommended over Sludge Wave. Acid Spray deals fairly little damage applies a potent debuff, but Qwilfish's lack of strong Fast Attack damage often means that the debuff won't be put into good use.
Great League | 3 / 5 |

These days, Qwilfish usually takes a back seat compared to other Water/Poison types such as Toxapex and Tentacruel. They possess more bulk and more consistent damage thanks to Poison Jab. Qwilfish does possess more reliable Water-type damage output however, thanks to Poison Sting's high energy generation and Aqua Tail's low cost. Qwilfish did have its moments, so here's a little history. The introduction of the TSR Twilight Cup back in February 2019 brought some attention and spotlight to Qwilfish, which became notable for being a relatively safe lead and spammer of Aqua Tails. Outside of that cup however, Qwilfish sees much less use due to relatively low bulk compared to other options. Its moveset also isn't anything spectacular either, which prevents Qwilfish from distinguishing itself from its competitors. One interesting niche going for Qwilfish is that it doesn't have a vulnerability to Grass-type attacks, which has been an issue with other popular Water-type picks such as Azumarill and Lanturn. A total of 8 resistances gives Qwilfish an advantage in those particular fights, but there's more to be desired if Qwilfish is to rise to the top of the ranks. | |
Ultra League | 1 / 5 |
Qwilfish is mostly puff and no stuff in Ultra League. However, its Poison-typing and charge moves does give it a niche against Fairy-types. | |
Master League | 0 / 5 |
It huffed, and it puffed, and it got blown away. |
