PvE Analysis

Tropius is not the Exeggutor you were hoping for. It has an okay moveset but cannot survive due to Flying and Grass-type being a particularly vulnerable pair.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

  • Razor Leaf can be paired with Leaf Blade for Grass-type coverage.
  • Similarly, Air Slash and Aerial Ace are paired for its relevant matchups. Both pairs are similar in terms of damage output.
  • Stomp has no utility on Tropius.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

  • Razor Leaf and Leaf Blade can cover the Rock-type weakness.
  • Air Slash and Aerial Ace can provide some extra Machamp hate.
  • Stomp can take a hard pass.

PvP Analysis

Air Slash is the generally more preferred pick, having a balance between damage output and energy generation, and is better at fueling Tropius's good Charged Attacks. Razor Leaf Tropius was a staple on Razor Leaf spam teams, but its nerf starting from Pokemon GO: Max Out has made it considerably less potent.

Leaf Blade solidifies Tropius as the Banana Blade of the Sky thanks to its cheap cost and high DPE. Brutal Swing gives coverage against Pokemon that resist Leaf Blade, most notably against Steel-type Pokemon. Aerial Ace is not absolutely necessary but does help Tropius with some form of coverage, and also gives it an advantage against other Grass types including the Tropius mirror.

Great League3.5 / 5

Tropius's claim to fame was during the Silph Arena's Tempest Cup in March 2019, where its rarity as a regional Pokemon became one of the most controversial debates surrounding its use. From the release of GO Battle League onwards, Tropius saw many moments to shine in the Great League, though it was rarely a meta staple. Its incredible bulk, moderately spammy moveset, and rare typing gave (and still gives) it distinct niches. It needs to be especially careful of Ice-type damage though. Even Azumarill can prove to be somewhat of a thorn if its Ice Beam lands on Tropius.

Ultra League0 / 5

Tropius's CP caps at 2194, resulting in underwhelming performance in Ultra league.

Master League0 / 5

Like in the Ultra League, Tropius doesn't have the stats to perform well in Master League.
