PvE Analysis
After its unintended release on December 16, 2023 and its subsequent removal from the game, White Kyurem returns for real as the star legendary in GO Tour: Unova. Thanks to Ice Fang, a wonderfully statted Ice Burn, and a jaw dropping Attack stat, White Kyurem commands a chilling reign as the supreme Ice attacker. White Kyurem stands out compared to its starring counterpart, Black Kyurem, by being stronger into targets where Ice is more effective than Dragon (on average).
Raid prowess is not the only reason to use White Kyurem. Ice Burn possesses an Adventure Effect - during encounters, it sets the target circle to near Excellent (and then slowing down), and increases catch rate by 50%. For 5000 Stardust and 5 Kyurem Candies, this effect becomes active for 10 minutes, extending up to 2 hours per individual use. Moreover, this catch rate boost also applies to autocatchers!
Best PvE Offensive Moveset
- Ice Fang and Ice Burn* turn White Kyurem into an apex Ice attacker.
- Dragon Breath's short duration offers better synergy in Party Play, but White Kyurem as a whole is less potent than Black Kyurem with Party Power.
- Blizzard is strongly outclassed by Ice Burn, but it still makes White Kyurem a decent Ice attacker in the event that your Kyurem cannot get Glaciate prior to fusing.
- Dragon Breath and Dragon Pulse makes White Kyurem an acceptable Dragon attacker, but it isn't particularly strong.
- Fusion Flare is a powerful Fire-type move, but White Kyurem's lack of STAB and Fire-type Fast Attack means that there are many other better Fire attackers. However, White Kyurem is strong enough to work in a pinch.
- Steel Wing, Ancient Power, and Focus Blast are all worth TMing away.
PvP Analysis
Ice Fang's relentless Ice-type damage is what defines White Kyurem's identity over other Dragon-type Pokemon, so it is often the preferred choice. Dragon Breath is still a powerful STAB alternative option, best for dominating the mirror match. Steel Wing is outclassed.
Fusion Flare is White Kyurem's cheapest attack and melts Steel-type Pokemon that seek to wall its frozen rampage. Ice Burn* is an incredible finishing move thanks to its immense raw power. Ancient Power is equally cheap can be used as a tech against Ho-Oh specifically, but is underwhelming elsewhere. Dragon Pulse is an alternative option over Ice Burn as it is White Kyurem's best Charged Attack against the likes of Palkia and Kyogre. However, the move is very underwhelming otherwise. Focus Blast can delete Steel-type Pokemon, but it is extremely expensive and is largely outclassed by Fusion Flare. Blizzard is outclassed by Ice Burn.
Great League | ||
---|---|---|
White Kyurem's CP is too high to fit into the Great League. | ||
Ultra League | ||
White Kyurem is heavily Attack-weighted, making it an incredibly fragile Pokemon in a CP-capped league such as this one. The presence of strong Dragon-types in the metagame such as Zygarde and Dragonite makes White Kyurem largely outclassed option. | ||
Master League | ||
White Kyurem commands a chilling reign in the Master League thanks to its immense CP, stat product, and amazing moveset. In a metagame filled with Dragon-, Flying-, and Ground-type Pokemon, White Kyurem finds ample opportunities to deliver chilling misery through its extremely powerful and reliable Ice-type damage. Steel-type Pokemon who seek to end White Kyurem's freezing rampage are swiftly dispatched by Fusion Flare.The most reliable counterplay to White Kyurem is strong Dragon-type damage from Palkia, Dialga, and opposing Kyurem fusions. Charm Primarina is also an extremely potent counter as it resists both Fire and Ice, but it can potentially lose to White Kyurem if Ice Burn lands. |
