PvE Analysis

After 7 generations, Alolan Golem was part of the first combination Rock / Electric evolutionary line. It has the advantage of being viable in both of its types, though its power still leaves much to be desired. Still, it's a solid choice for newer players due to its role compression, though it shouldn't be invested in too heavily due to how badly it is outclassed by other big-names with both of its types.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

  • Rock Throw is superior to Volt Switch in most circumstances.
  • Rollout* is almost identical to Rock Throw in terms of average DPS, but it's also slower, making it a tiny bit worse in practice. Still, it's generally just as good.
  • Volt Switch can be paired with Wild Charge for an Electric moveset.
  • Stone Edge is better than Rock Blast unless Alolan Golem faints with a partially charged bar.
  • Wild Charge is Alolan Golem's best charged move against Flying types if they don't have a double weakness to Rock.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

  • Volt Switch is the best Fast Move choice in general due to its outstanding damage output on defense.
  • Rollout* is the best choice for a Rock Type fast move.
  • Rock Throw is the weakest pick.
  • Rock Blast is slightly better than Wild Charge, having a lower energy cost, early damage window, and cross-coverage with Volt Switch.
  • Stone Edge is nasty if it hits, but it may not get the chance to launch.

PvP Analysis

Volt Switch is generally the move of choice due to its high energy gains and solid damage. Rollout offers significant energy generation while falling behind in damage output, leaving Alolan Golem more dependent on its Charge Moves to close out the fight. Rock Throw is now somewhat out of favor due to its poor energy generation.

Wild Charge is the main charge move used on Alolan Golem thanks to its high DPE rating and offering coverage against Water-types. Rock Blast is slightly more favorable than Stone Edge due to its lower energy cost which also allows shield-baiting, even though Stone Edge has a more efficient DPE value.

Great League3 / 5

Alolan Golem is an offensive-oriented Pokemon in PvP, with somewhat well-rounded stats, a very vulnerable typing, and a slow but hard-hitting moveset. A weakness to the almost ubiquitous Fighting and Water-types sets it back quite a bit, as does unextraordinary bulk. What it does have going for it is a powerful moveset that allows it to compete against much more bulkier Pokemon in the league. Overall a somewhat risky choice due to its easily exploitable weaknesses, which leaves Alolan Golem dependent on limited formats to avoid some of its vulnerabilities.

Ultra League0 / 5

Alolan Golem has the same problems in Ultra League as it did in Great League, but unfortunately many popular Pokemon in Ultra League also dispatch Alolan Golem very easily, which makes it difficult to use in general. If you're looking at open Ultra League, consider other Pokemon instead.

Master League0 / 5

With a max CP of 2949, Alolan Golem falls behind many of the big players in Master League stat-wise. The vulnerable typing, unimpressive bulk, and slow moveset are still issues that Alolan Golem has, which overall results in losses in many matchups.
