PvE Analysis

Shadow Victreebel is a solid attacker with both of types, sporting good offensive presence on both sides of the spectrum. That said, its Grass Type role is more potent and useful generally speaking, and it is definitely out-classed in that area.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

  • Magical Leaf* is ideal for Shadow Victreebel’s role as Water and Rock-type slayer.

  • Razor Leaf is okay, but it definitely falls behind Magical Leaf.

  • Solar Beam and Leaf Blade are both stellar charge moves. Solar Beam has higher DPS on paper, but Leaf Blade performs better in practice.

  • Acid can be paired with Sludge Bomb to take on Fairy types or other Grass Types.
  • Leaf Tornado and Acid Spray perform poorly in gyms and raids.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

  • Magical Leaf* is Shadow Victreebel's best Fast Move on defense. It's basically a better version of Razor Leaf, and is better than Acid even if resisted.

  • Despite having the same type as Shadow Victreebel's Fast Move, Leaf Blade is arguably the best Charged Move choice, as it comes out frequently and is hard to dodge.

  • Sludge Bomb is also worth considering, as it has different coverage and decent parameters on defense.

  • Leaf Tornado, Acid Spray, and Solar Beam all fall behind on defense.

PvP Analysis

Magical Leaf* is a great move in PvP thanks to its above average energy generation and damage output alike. Razor Leaf was once Shadow Victreebel's niche, but it was nerfed on September 2024.

Leaf Blade's low cost and high damage makes it a fantastic Charged Attack option. Sludge Bomb is a strong Poison-type move that can deal a ton of damage if unshielded. Acid Spray, on the other hand, makes the bet that your opponent is going to shield no matter what and reduces their defense significantly. This either allows Shadow Victreebel to hit even harder, or at least sets up a better farm for your next Pokémon.

Great League

Shadow Victreebel was infamous for terrorizing the Great League with its laser-focused mission - cutting everything in the world down using nothing but Razor Leaf. Its partner in crime, Bastiodon, took care of Flying-, Fire-, Bug-, and Poison-type opponents and covered Shadow Victreebel's frailty with its nigh unmatched bulk. The archetype fondly known as "Grasshole" consisted of these two Pokemon and another Razor Leafer - usually Tropius. Together, they effortlessly wiped teams that either had poor alignment or lacked multiple Grass-type counters, in large part due to most of their damage being unshieldable. However, the team's inflexible coverage also made it equally vulnerable if it could not find good alignment.

Razor Leaf has been nerfed since September 2024, and Shadow Victreebel's niche has become suspect. It now has greater competition with Venusaur, whose superior bulk and access to Vine Whip makes it a generally better option.

Ultra League

While the Shadow Boost works well in Great League, Ultra League is where that loss of defense genuinely hurts. It can pull the same role as its non-shadow forme, but its performance does tend to suffer given the bulk that the Ultra League tends to demand.

Master League

Victreebel’s low CP cap prevents it from being competitive in Master League.
