PvE Analysis

The Shadow Boost was honestly all that Golurk needed to really excel. This shadowy ghost is one of the better Ground Types in the game, and its Ghost sub-typing tends to help it a bit on that front.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

Mud SlapMud Slap + Earth PowerEarth PowerBest
AstonishAstonish + Shadow PunchShadow PunchOkay
  • Mud Slap and Earth Power make Shadow Golurk a really good Ground Type attacker.
  • Astonish and Shadow Punch are bad, but if you're desperate for a Ghost attacker then... go hunt some Gastly.
  • Dynamic Punch is a great move, but not great on Shadow Golurk.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

  • Stick with Mud Slap. It beats out Astonish without breaking a sweat.
  • All of Shadow Golurk's charged moves are great for defense. Dynamic Punch hits Dark types like Tyranitar hard but leaves it open to other Ghosts, Earth Power is objectively powerful but leaves Golurk a sitting duck against anything that resists Ground, and Shadow Punch has wide coverage and 3 bars, but fairly low power.

PvP Analysis

Mud SlapMud Slap + Shadow PunchShadow Punch and Dynamic PunchDynamic Punch

Though Mud Slap and Astonish are equally amazing, Mud Slap is preferred as it provides Golurk with a consistent source of Ground-type damage that cannot be covered by its Charged Attacks

Shadow Punch is a good low-cost STAB move that lets Golurk deal reasonably consistent Ghost-type damage. Earth Power also has STAB which makes it the most powerful move for Golurk, but Dynamic Punch is overall more valuable for its wide coverage and cheaper cost.

Great League4 / 5

Golurk is a strong glass cannon with potent and unresisted coverage. Hiding behind shields and its handy resistances, Golurk can mow down teams with Mud Slap's high damage and Shadow Punch's cheap cost. Its Ghost typing sets Golurk apart from other Mud Slappers such as Marowak and Gastrodon, allowing it to wall Fighting-type Pokemon (though it must still be wary of their coverage moves) and butcher Psychic-type Pokemon such as Cresselia. As a glass cannon sweeper with reliable damage, Shadow Golurk is the preferred variant.

Ultra League4 / 5

Golurk's Ground/Ghost typing is once again very potent in this league, completely shutting down Registeel and Cobalion while providing impeccable offensive coverage. It is a great sweeper still, but will still need shield investment.

Master League0 / 5

With a max CP of 3226 Golurk doesn't have great stats to compete well in Master League, and there are better Ground-types available here.
