PvE Analysis

The Shadow Boost was honestly all that Golurk needed to really excel. This shadowy ghost is one of the better Ground Types in the game, and its Ghost sub-typing tends to help it a bit on that front.

Best PvE Offensive Moveset

Mud Slap + Earth PowerBest
Astonish + Shadow PunchOkay
  • Mud Slap and Earth Power make Shadow Golurk a really good Ground Type attacker.
  • Astonish and Shadow Punch are bad, but if you're desperate for a Ghost attacker then... go hunt some Gastly.
  • Dynamic Punch is a great move, but not great on Shadow Golurk.

Best PvE Defensive Moveset

Mud Slap + Dynamic Punch, Earth Power, or Shadow PunchBest
  • Stick with Mud Slap. It beats out Astonish without breaking a sweat.
  • All of Shadow Golurk's charged moves are great for defense. Dynamic Punch hits Dark types like Tyranitar hard but leaves it open to other Ghosts, Earth Power is objectively powerful but leaves Golurk a sitting duck against anything that resists Ground, and Shadow Punch has wide coverage and 3 bars, but fairly low power.

PvP Analysis

Mud Slap + Shadow Punch and Earth Power or Dynamic Punch

Mud Slap is more favorable for its significantly higher damage output. Astonish is all around a terrible fast move.

Shadow Punch is a poor move too, but benefits from the low Energy cost and STAB. Earth Power also has STAB which makes it the most powerful move for Golurk, but Dynamic Punch might be more valuable for its wide coverage.

Great League1 / 5

Golurk looks like a cool ancient guardian, but unfortunately that's about all it's good for in PvP. A high Attack stat limits its overall bulk in Great League, while a unique Ground/Ghost typing isn't very synergistic and makes Golurk vulnerable against common typings. While its charge moves are quite strong and have good coverage, Golurk fails to make good use of them with unimpressive energy generation and average damage output at best from its fast moves. Access to Ground-type moves do give it favorable matchups against various popular Steel-types, but its Ghost-type coverage is rather lackluster against most Psychic-types other than Medicham.

Ultra League3 / 5

Golurk's Ground- and Ghost-type coverage makes it a decent option against the popular Steel-Ghost core of this meta, but that's about all Golurk can do. Its fragility doesn't help it either.

Master League0 / 5

With a max CP of 3226 Golurk doesn't have great stats to compete well in Master League, and there are better Ground-types available here.
