Volcarona
PvE Analysis
The long-awaited Sun Pokemon itself, Volcarona's origins in Pokemon Go trace back to 2023. This is a good Pokemon, and one of the few that's blessed with the rare ability to operate well on both of its types, Fire and Bug. As a Fire Type, it's pretty strong overall and definitely worth adding to your roster if you need more literal fire-power, but it's also got some pretty steep competition that doesn't really let it shine outside of rare moments when its Bug sub-typing is advantageous in some way. As a Bug type, it's near the top of the type, but the call for Bug Types is kind of minimal. In this light, Volcarona's strongest performance is against Grass Types, where it can mix-and-match its moves and leverage its double resistance to tank hits and score big numbers. It's not the best Pokemon, but it's still a great option when its skills are needed!
Volcarona also has potential in the future, as it has a signature Fire Type attack by the name of Fiery Dance. But when/if we'll see this move remains to be seen.
Best PvE Offensive Moveset
- Bug Bite and Bug Buzz are ideal if you need some Bug Type damage
- Fire Spin and Overheat are ideal if you need some Fire Type damage
- Solar Beam is thematically relevant to our Solar Moth, but ultimately inferior.
- Hurricane is also inferior in this case.
Best PvE Defensive Moveset
- Fire Spin is the superior option in general, with higher base power, more energy generation, and off-type synergy with its best Fast Move for defense... though not too great, as they have a resistance profile similar enough to be problematic
- Bug Bite is usable, but it will tend to run into problems.
- Bug Buzz is the Charged move that's most likely to actually come out on defense due to its lower energy requirement.
- Solar Beam has outstanding synergy for taking down a number of Volcarona's would-be counters, but its high energy cost and long damage window means that it will likely never actually help at all.
- Hurricane is hard to dodge and can come out of left field to surprise attackers, but the Rock Types that prey hard on Volcarona resist it, and Volcarona is pretty likely to drop before it ever comes out.
PvP Analysis
Fire Spin + Overheat and Bug Buzz or Solar Beam |
---|
Fire Spin sports slightly above average energy generation. Bug Bite allows for more flexibility due to being a 1 turn move, but is inferior to Fire Spin both statwise and coverage wise.
Overheat is Volcarona's cheapest and most powerful Charged Attack, but must be used carefully due to the self-debuff it incurs. Bug Buzz benefits from STAB and can provide Volcarona some coverage. Solar Beam is extremely expensive, but can annihilate unsuspecting Water- and Rock-type enemies. Hurricane can also provide some coverage, but is generally Volcarona's weakest option.
Great League | |
---|---|
Although its type combination shows promise, Volcarona's fraility and sluggish Charged Attacks do not do it much favors here. Better Fire-type options like Charizard, Kantonian Ninetales, and Alolan Marowak exist. | |
Ultra League | |
Ultra League's increased bulk allows Volcarona to reach its Charged Attacks more consistently, but nowhere near consistent enough to be a viable Pokemon | |
Master League | |
Ho-Oh does everything that Volcarona does, but better. Volcarona can perform better in Master League Premier, where its stats are actually respectable. However, its sluggish and unreliable moveset still keeps it down. |
