Drapion
PvE Analysis
Like most Poison-types in this game, Drapion seems destined for mediocrity. As an attacker, it has to battle it out with stuff like Beedrill and Nidoqueen. Its half decent tankiness and weird looks might at least make it a fun (suboptimal) alternative to something like Muk to drop in gyms.
Best PvE Offensive Moveset
Poison Sting + Sludge Bomb | Best |
---|---|
Bite + Crunch | Best |
Poison Sting and Infestation perform similarly in neutral situations.
Sludge Bomb is Drapion’s best STAB charged move
Crunch is Drapion's second best charged move and should be paired with Bite
Fell Stinger can pair with Infestation to make Drapion into a bug attacker, but it's not good at this role.
- Aqua Tail and Ice Fang have no offensive purpose.
Best PvE Defensive Moveset
Infestation hits generally harder than Poison Sting. It’s still on par with it even against Pokemon that resist it, such as Machamp.
Bite is superior to Poison Sting on defense, but Infestation is still the superior option.
Ice Fang can rack up fast damage on common Dragon Type attackers
Aqua Tail and Crunch are both 3-bar charged moves that can be tricky to dodge.
Fell Stinger is also 3 bar, but is more widely resisted and easier to dodge.
- Sludge Bomb is more powerful, but won’t be fired as often.
PvP Analysis
Poison Sting + Crunch and Aqua Tail or Sludge Bomb |
---|
Poison Sting provides Drapion with incredible energy generation, allowing it to spam its Charged Attacks. Its other Fast Attacks are mediocre, though Bite sees niche play every now for its reliable Dark-type damage.
Crunch is Drapion's primary weapon, sporting a decent cost, STAB, moderate power, and a debuff chance. Aqua Tail is often Drapion's secondary choice, being its cheapest option and providing coverage against Ground-type Pokemon. However, Sludge Bomb can be ran instead to improve Drapion's consistency against Fairy-type Pokemon. Fell Stinger is too weak and doesn't have much synergy with Poison Sting. Return is too expensive and doesn't quite provide Drapion with much coverage.
Great League | 3 / 5 |
---|---|
Drapion is more of a well-rounded Pokemon; with no highlights of extraordinary stats or epic movesets, Drapion kind of falls in the middle of the pack in Great League. It isn't the only Pokemon with the interesting Dark/Poison typing, which means it has a lot of competition to fulfill its role. What makes Drapion sort of stand out is its larger moveset diversity, which enables it to be more versatile. Among the Dark-types and Poison-types in this league, Drapion's numerous moveset options gives it a lot of flexibility, with options for frequent charge move spam or fast move damage pressure. Unfortunately it's not quite at the level of top tier meta Pokemon, so Drapion tends to see more use in specific formats that cater to its strengths. | |
Ultra League | 5 / 5 |
The level 50 update increases Drapion's performance in Ultra League, allowing it to reach the 2500 CP cap while increasing its IV optimization for more bulk stats. Dark typing at first glance might seem appealing against the popular Giratina, but Drapion can struggle against Dragon Breath variants even with both Bite and Crunch. Access to Aqua Tail is a great option to deal unresisted damage to other Dark/Poison Pokemon like Skuntank or Alolan Muk, giving Drapion an advantage. Unfortunately Aqua Tail is generally considered a weaker move in the meta, and without STAB Drapion tends to struggle against more neutral matchups. | |
Master League | 0 / 5 |
Drapion doesn't have sufficient stats to perform well in Master League. Most of the wins it will get would be against off-meta picks weak to its typing, which isn't saying much. |
