Where to Play

Torchic spawns will be dramatically increased everywhere during the duration of this event. You aren’t required to play anywhere specifically, but here are some tips for getting the most out of the location you choose.

Time Travel

Since this event is 3-6PM based on local time, By playing near a timezone shift, players in some parts of the world can take advantage by starting an hour earlier or ending an hour later. Start East then make your way West sometime after the first hour. This shouldn’t affect most players but can be a nice bonus to players willing to travel a little more during CD. Remember to stay West as you evolve for the exclusive move.

Exploring the Community

Use Community Day, and Pokemon Go in general, as an excuse to explore local areas. If you’re blessed with multiple, good locations, make use of them throughout various Community Days!

Playing with Friends

Community Day should be about the community, both the area and your local PoGo Players. Get together with friends, find your local group using PokeNav, or be the first in your area to create a group. If you see other trainers in your gyms, that means there’s others out there playing! More trainers means more fun, and Lure Modules appear for all players, so you can all share the increased spawns. Returning and new players- ask around and figure out where established players are planning to play!

Gyms for Raids

Players should be focused on catching this CD, but playing near gyms may lead to easy raid completion before or after the event, while everyone is already out.

Clusters and Lures

If you want to catch the most Torchic, focus on cluster spawns in areas with lots of network traffic such as parking lots and apartment complexes and high Pokestop dense areas that can be easily Lured up.

Weather

Pursuing weather-boosted Torchic will grant you higher CP and IV Torchic so it’s advised to hunt in forecasted Clear areas. This comes with it decreased catch rates but is offset in Stardust gained and saved from catching weather boosted Pokemon. Pay attention to official weather reports as well as other trainers playing in different level 11 S2 cells (in-game weather boundaries).

Note About Nests

Since Swinub Community Day in February, nesting spawns stopped or are at least extremely dulled during CD hours. Every Community Day is slightly different in regards to spawn rates but it is worth noting that players can likely visit nests and not worry about diluted spawns.

Items to Bring

6 Star Pieces

Triple dust is one of the best ways to use a Star Piece making this CD a great time to use some. You’ll want to have plenty of Pokemon Storage space too and use this event as an opportunity to clear through your research banked encounters. Triple the dust also provides an additional reason to Incense. 3x dust means you are making a profit even if only playing at ⅓ the pace. Even if your time is limited, a few Star Piece can go a long way!

0-6 Incense + Lures

Having 6 Incense will let you crack open one every 30 minutes and make it last the entirety of the event. Keep walking! Incense spawns more Pokémon while you’re moving! Even if you’re stuck at work where nothing spawns during the event window, popping some Incense could help you nab a shiny or two. How many Incense you choose to use depends on availability, meta-relevancy, and rarity of the featured Pokemon. 25 Incense can be purchased in bulk for 1250 in the Shop (50 each) at any time for those looking at an alternative to various Legacy Special Boxes. 25 Incense is enough for 4 Community Days and an extra to spare.

Remember “quick catching” your Incense spawns will still make them visible on the map after the catch.

New Lures?

New Lure Modules have just been added: Glacial, Mossy, and Magnetic. We can make some assumptions about how these will function but won't be sure until CD starts!

The new lures allow you to evolve a few new Sinnoh Pokemon and have specific, themed spawns related to each one. The assumptions are that during CD, these lures will likely last 3 hours but won't be majority Torchic spawns, so there are tradeoffs.

Avoid spamming new Lures so that those that want to catch Torchic can do so uninterrupted. At the same time, know what Eevee, Magnemite, and Nosepass in your collection you wish to evolve and rename them to easily identify them. You wont want to spend time during your CD figuring out which Pokemon to evolve, costing yourself valuable time catching Torchic and farming Stardust.

PRO-TIP: Use a new Lure at 5:59. It will still last 3 hours and you can catch a few Pokemon while you evolve and trade Torchic. You wont be able to lure anything Lured during Community Day, but there's usually a few unhit Pokestops, hopefully ones in air conditioning or with comfortable seating.

0-1 Lucky Egg

Community Day can be a great time to coordinate Friendship level ups for both players to egg and receive double XP as it’s likely you’ll both be playing. Make sure to coordinate with your friends as it is usually easier to plan for level ups in the minutes before Community Day starts so that the actual event can be spent catching.

Berries and Great/Ultra Balls

This becomes especially important when you’re planning on clearing out your research bank during CD.

It’s always a good idea to stock up before CD. The themed research “Catch 3 Torchic” can be easily accomplished to help keep the Pokeballs flowing during the event so it may not be necessary to stock up beforehand in all areas. Players in need of resources should remember to always open 20 daily gifts and to upgrade item bag storage as soon as possible. It is an investment that quickly pays for itself if you’re able to occasionally grind and stock up on items.

Some Incubators?

While this event provides 0 benefits for Incubating, if you’re already using a Star Piece, now is a fine time for a few incubations. A typical drawback of incubating during CD (the hatch animation time) is skippable in the current patch by tapping while the animation starts.

Acquiring Torchic

Unfortunately, Niantic has broken their (short-lived) trend of including the upcoming CD Pokemon in raids leading up to CD. It is also not available in research.

Luckily, Torchic has been prominently featured in multiple events this year already and many players may have access to high IV Torchic. Those that don’t may consider using Lucky Friend trades acquiring Torchic before or after CD depending on current collection and availability.

Any previous Torchic obtained with undesirable IVs should be traded at least for candy and to reroll IVs (preferably with a Best Friend). Additional Torchic candy can be earned prior to the event by making Torchic your Buddy Pokemon, and by making Torchic a Gym Defender and stuffing it full of berries! If you have limited time to play this CD and are close to the candy needed for another evolution, these tips can put you over the threshold for evolving another Torchic for the exclusive moveset.

Breaking the Bank

The Research “Bank” or “stack” aka queue is a feature that is officially not supported by Niantic. This means proceed with caution. Niantic’s official stance is that they will not in any way compensate any errors that arise from using this feature. That all said, it can be very helpful on CDs offering bonus Stardust.

FieldResearch

When you run from a research encounter (or an error occurs or your collection is full), the encounter is stored above your existing research tasks. This gives the appearance of having 4 research tasks.

Fleeing from additional tasks (simply claim your reward then run away from the encounter) will allow you to store multiple encounters this way. This is what is commonly referred to as the “bank” “stack” or “queue”. The research will appear here from oldest to newest, meaning if you accidentally run from an encounter, you will have to clear through your entire bank to find it again. Rewards will appear in the order that you complete the task, with only one visible at a time. They’re not gone. Even though you can only see one at a time, the other research is “underneath” the top encounter in your stack. Catch that Pokemon and the next will be visible. While you can store breakthrough encounters and Special research encounters, these follow different rules and do not appear in the same bank.

What’s the Catch?

Niantic recently imposed a limit of 100 banked Pokemon. When exceeding this limit, Pokemon will be deleted from the bank. This is the part Niantic now claims no responsibility for. Bank carefully. If you’re going to make use of this feature, consider downloading a counting widget to track your capacity. Recent reports have the oldest banked Pokemon being deleted (though it's always possible this can change). It’s a good idea to know the first Pokemon you have banked and check to see if that changes after acquiring more rewards. If so, you’re at capacity and should catch a few before completing more research.

Using the bank can be a very rewarding element to quickly completing research tasks. After becoming familiar with throwing at task rewards, banking them will allow you to quickly encounter Pokemon that are easy to throw at. The Research Task List can give you a full list of currently available task rewards. Evolved Pokemon like Loudred, Weepinbell, Exeggutor, Breloom and more are easily bankable in the days leading up to the event and will give a lot of stardust.

Even if you currently have 0 banked research encounter rewards, start saving today. Current Detective Pikachu tasks are incredibly easy to quickly complete and all essentially reward 450 dust on a Star Piece.

Star Piece Like a Beast

You’ll want to make room in your Pokemon Storage if you haven’t already. Delete room for Torchic so you can IV check them after. Clear 100 slots for your banked encounters (which may also have good IV) and clean even more space for wild encounters. You’ll want as much room as possible going into CD and you’ll want to make sure you spend as little time switching menus as possible so that you can catch anything that pops up. Even common spawns during this even grant as much dust as you’d normally receive for a Stage 1 Pokemon on a Star Piece.

1st catch of the day or 7th streak catch of the day is additional bonuses added to the dust value based on evolution stage.

If you will catch around 21 Pokemon before Community Day, it is more beneficial to not bother having your 1st catch of the day occur during CD. This counts after midnight the night before too. Most players shouldn’t aim to capitalize on this bonus- but if you really only play during CD, this is fine to do. Put simply, just play the game and don’t worry about this niche min-maxing.


However, players with their 7-day streak on Sunday will benefit from waiting if they wouldn’t otherwise earn 13,200 Stardust in the meantime. Accounting for weather boosted and evolved spawns this number is probably closer to 115 spawns. Basically, if you’re planning on playing the morning before CD, you can do so as normal or you can not play and basically receive the same amount of Stardust or more!

Before Community Day Starts

Here are a few other things to keep in mind right before Community Day starts for making the most of the granted bonuses.

  • Trainers on their 7th streak catch of the day should wait till CD for their first catch. See “Star Piece Like a Beast”.

  • Existing spawns can change to Torchic. Clicking on Pokemon to catch or even just to shiny check will prevent them from turning into Torchic. It’s fine to check for shinies you don’t yet have, but you might as well just catch the Pokemon at that point too. If you want to catch the most Torchic, avoid clicking on spawns as Community Day is about to begin.

  • You can only complete research from each stop once daily.  If you complete a task at a given stop, you cannot receive the “Catch 3” task from that stop during Community Day. Occasionally, receiving the task from a stop will lock it into its non-CD task.

Now, with those in mind, there is still room for choice. If you’ll be playing all Community Day then you might not care about one spawn point here and there, and catching weather boosted Machop or shiny checking a Wailmer may be worth it to you.

Use this time before the event starts to prep; spin stops, transfer Pokemon, open gifts (and level up friendships), Raid, check-in, and obtain/give out Meltan boxes.

Set Alarms for Items and Evolving

Before the event, consider setting an alarm on your phone for various CD intervals to remind yourself to reapply premium items if you’re using them. There’s a lot to keep track of during Community Day between quick catching, shiny checking, appraising, and talking and catching up with friends! Setting some alerts the night before could potentially earn you thousands of Stardust you’d lose out on if you forgot to break a Star Piece.

Research

During Community Day, Research Tasks are changed to “Catch 3 Torchic” with the following rewards;

  • 500 Stardust.

  • 2 Ultra Balls.

  • 5 Great Balls.

  • 2 Pinap Berries.

This allows you to not stress about Research during the event and concentrate on catching. It also means that Trainers can rest easy knowing that Community Day itself will help provide them with additional Pinaps, Ultra Balls, and Great Balls! There are a few additional things to keep in mind as far as how this functioned last Community Day;

  • Research from each stop can only be completed once each day. If you complete a task at a given stop, you cannot receive the “Catch 3 Torchic” task from that stop.

  • Tasks revert to their pre-CD tasks when CD is over but you cannot receive research from Stops where you completed “Catch 3 Torchic” or the original research.

  • Because of this, you may decide to skip over stops during CD that you know give desirable research (from Discord, Facebook, etc.) or complete them before CD starts.

  • Many players may do the opposite, choosing not to complete Research in areas they know they will be during CD for easy rewards.

  • Check to see if you have completed the Research Task of a given Pokestop by the indicator in the top right corner of a Pokestop

What's in the Box?

Legacy Community Day Special Boxes have held a variety of supplies and are available shortly before the start of Community Day. A list of previous and current contents can be found on our Legacy Special Box list (as well as cost analysis breakdowns). June Community Day introduced Great and Ultra Boxes, amazing deals for an extremely limited time, disappearing at the end of CD in America. This section will include a more thorough breakdown upon release of the Special Boxes in the Shop.

Expect 0-3 new boxes to be added during CD and removed shortly after.

Price justifications and analysis of all other current boxes can be found on our Legacy Special Box list.

The only way to evaluate this box is as an Incubators and Star Piece sale. The combinations of those items would cost 500 coins, making this a measly 4% discount. This ranks it 55th by this metric and basically dead last at 115th when also comparing it against boxes containing Raid Passes.

Exclusive Move Analysis: Blast Burn

Note: Blaze Kick has been nerfed from 50 damage down to 45.

With Blast Burn, Blaziken jumps from behind Flareon to ahead of Moltres in DPS as a Fire attacker.

Fire-Types ranked by neutral DPS

Blast Burn Blaziken is extremely good. DPS-wise, there is a bigger differential between it at Moltres than there is between Moltres and Flareon. If you viewed Moltres as the best Fire Pokemon previously, Blaziken is here to fight for that title.

Moltres does have noticeably higher TDO meaning Stardust-wise, it will still be a more efficient add to your battle parties and sometimes outperforms it in simulations. Moltres, however, requires Rare Candy. Blaziken won’t require this resource and is more easy to obtain a Lucky version of, meaning you can power up multiple with ease. Moltres and Blaziken will likely both have their respective uses though and fit nicely into the two uses for Fire-type Pokemon.

Grass and Bug

Both the Flying-type Moltres and the Fighting-type Blaziken double resist Bug attacks but Moltres also double resists Grass attacks. It’s a resistance regardless so Blaziken won’t be too hurt from Grass attacks, but Moltres also brings Sky Attack to the fight. It’s worth noting that Moltres’s best Fire-type attack, Overheat, is a one-bar charge move while Sky Attack gives it access to a powerful two-bar in these matchups. With Sky Attack, Moltres is functioning as a Flying-type Pokemon. This gives Moltres a notable niche but there are instances here where Blaziken will still be better in terms of DPS while also having key resistances too.

Steel and Ice

Here Blaziken has the type advantage. Moltres takes neutral damage against Ice attacks instead of resisting them. Additionally, Blaziken has the strikingly powerful Counter as a fast move. This gives it additional fighting power against Ice and Steel Pokemon, outputting even higher DPS than the above chart. Against Steel specifically, Blaziken is the top counter!

PvP

Blast Burn Blaziken is immediately usable even in the current Nightmare Cup for those of you that have not yet had their Arena Cup this month. From the linked article:

It’s so frail that other Fighters (not named Lucario) will have the advantage against it just out of fast move damage, but what it lacks in bulk it makes up in Blast Burn, a formidable charged move which charges quite fast and can one-shot almost anything in the meta.

In PvP, you'll likely be pairing Blast Burn with Blaziken's other new move.

New Move Analysis: Blaze Kick

Blaze Kick is still the fastest move in Pokemon Go though a nerf from 50 down to 45 damage in PvE significantly hurts its performance. You'll prefer the exclusive Blast Burn in a majority of scenarios now, though Blaze Kick's low energy cost, high speed, and early damage window still provide some utility.

2 Blast Burns (100 energy) takes 6.60 seconds to complete. 3 Blaze Kicks (also 100 energy) takes 3.6 seconds. In those 3 seconds additional Fire Spins or Counters will generate about 27 energy, almost enough to use another Blaze Kick. Its damage window comes early too, meaning a Blaziken with both moves unlocked my be able to fire off an extra attack before it kicks the bucket.

Blaze Kick still provides an upgrade to Overheat worth looking at for players with a fully evolved Blaziken. For raiding, the benefits of an additional charge move are likely extremely unnoteworthy.

PvP Possibilities

In PvP, however, you'll still want access to both moves (as Blaze Kick is currently unchanged in PvP). All of Blaziken’s other move options require too much energy to be effective.

Blaze Kick is a rather unexciting clone of Fire Punch but is still preferable to Blast Burn simply for the cheaper energy cost. The uber legacy Stone Edge also has some considerations for type coverage.

Possibilities also exist for Blaze Kick as an effect move. In the main series games, it has an increased critical hit ratio and a 10% chance of burning the target. As far as a Go implementation goes, critical hits could be easily brought to PvP or simply represented as an attack increase. Burn also deals damage, but importantly also lowers the burned Pokemon's Attack stat, a feature already seen in PvP. We may not see such changes until Blaze Kick is live, but it's worth noting that Niantic has used past CDs to introduce completely new mechanics to the game.

Setting Goals

You’ll want to catch as many Torchic as possible regardless because of that sweet, sweet Stardust. You may also want a battle-ready army of Blaziken for future raids. Setting goals and having an idea of how many Torchic you wish to power up also lets you calculate exactly how much candy to save. If Torchic is not a common spawn in your biome, save some candy to Power Up a Blaziken or four!

As mentioned previously, especially if your CD availability is low, swap Torchic with local players leading up to CD and make use of the Lucky friend feature if your desperate and don’t want to wait till december to evolve them.

Set goals based on previous Community Days as a benchmark. Use this to let you know how aggressively you need to hunt and Pinap, as well as how many high IV options to target.

Each Blaziken costs 123 Torchic candy which is 18 catches + transfers or 10 catches w/ Pinaps + transfers. Maxing out a Pokemon will cost between 118-304 candy depending on the level (248 for level 20 Pokemon). Evolving and Powering Up a full team (with average level 20) will cost 2227 candy. This can be accomplished with 195 Pinap catches + transfers or 361 catches + transfers.

As noted in “Looking Forward” evolving extra Shiny Torchic with the exclusive move may make great future trades with Lucky Friends.

Blaziken and PvP

  • For the Great League, target Torchic 519-575 CP and lower.

  • For the Ultra League, target Torchic 871-957 CP and lower.

Pokemon in these ranges are not guaranteed to be under the CP cap. Check with an IV calculator before evolving.

Making Trades

You (probably) have until 1 hour after the event ends to IV check, trade, and evolve for the exclusive moveset. Set alarms and keep track of how long different activities take you so you can be better prepared for future CD events.

When picking a trading partner, there are now three different options to consider each with their own benefits.

Play Community Day with your trading partner.

  • Carpool

  • Catch the same spawns (for even trades) and split the role of IV checking

  • Can start trading even before CD ends

Play 10km (6.21 mi) distance from your trading partner.

  • 1 additional candy per trade.

Trade with a Lucky Friend!

Obviously this will can a combination of one of the previous two options. Coordinating with a Lucky Friend during CD can allow you to swap a day 1 shiny Torchic to reroll IVs. Coordinating with multiple Lucky friends can allow you to reroll a few for IVs, though you can only do one special trade each day.

Here are some additional features to keep in mind about trading:

  • Players are limited to 100 trades + 1 special trade per day. This is resets after your phone goes past midnight.

  • Swapping a Shiny will count as a Special Trade and can also be done once daily.

  • Pick a trade partner you have high friendship with. IV floor increases with friendship tier.
    Good Friendship - 1/1/1 IV floor
    Great Friendship - 2/2/2 IV floor
    Ultra Friendship - 3/3/3 IV floor
    Best Friendship - 5/5/5 IV floor

  • Pokemon caught farther than 10km (6.21 mi) apart award 2 candy when traded.

  • Lucky Pokemon have an IV floor of 12/12/12. Read more about Lucky Pokemon here.

The Technicals: Catch Rate and IV Checking

Torchic will likely have its Base Catch Rate changed to 40% as we have seen with previous CD spawns.

Our easy-to-use catch rate calculator can be found here if you’d like to do your own calculations. Here are the breakdowns for players with a Gold Fire badge. These calculations also assume maximum radius Great! throws. Your ability to reliably throw into smaller bonus radiuses may also increase throughout the day, increasing your catch rate.

  • Torchic levels 1-7 have an 89% chance or higher to be caught with a curved Poke Ball Great! Throw. Poke Ball Pinap anything under 167 CP and consider up to 213 CP.

  • Torchic level 12 and below have a 90% chance or higher to be caught with a curved Great Ball Great! Throw. Great Ball Pinap anything under 293 CP and consider up to 375 CP.

  • Torchic level 20 and below have a 90% chance or higher to be caught with a curved Ultra Ball Great! Throw. Ultra Ball Pinap anything under 489 CP and consider up to 640 CP. Even a level 35 Torchic has an 82% chance to be caught per throw using a curved Great! Throw Ultra Ball, allowing for proficient throwers to utilize Pinap berries every throw. Consider not quick-catching Torchic above 661 CP or using a Razz Berry while doing so.

Throwing with no bonus will eat through your resources faster making it worthwhile to learn how to consistently throw Great! Throws (+ video link) The following will result in a 90% catch rate with curveballs and no throw bonus:

  • Poke Ball Torchic levels 1-4 (89-114 CP and below)

  • Great Ball Torchic levels 8 and below (193-246 CP and below)

  • Ultra Ball Torchic levels 13 and below (318-406 CP a652nd below)

  • Ultra Ball Razz Berry Torchic levels 25 and below (612-781 CP and below). Great Ball Golden Razz Berries can be used on higher level Torchic to ensure a 90% catch rate per throw.

The following string can help you quickly check for any perfect IV Torchic;

Pokemon with these CP values are not guaranteed to be 100% IV but this could help you narrow that search.

For mass IV checking, the simplest tip is to sort by CP (or #, which also sorts by CP) and look at one species at a time. From there, scroll through, highest to lowest, looking at Pokemon levels. You can quickly check a Pokemon’s level by how much Star Dust it would cost to power up. This cost is halved for Lucky Pokemon. For example:

35 - 8000

34/33 - 7000

32/31 - 6000

30/29 - 5000

28/27 - 4500

26/25 - 4000

These values can be used to determine high-level Pokemon at a quick glance.

Quick Appraising

As you’re scrolling, IV check Pokemon until you find something with a lower Stardust cost. You can filter out, rename, or transfer any Pokemon with a high level and a low CP found this way. These Pokemon will have lower IVs. That means they may make for battle-ready attackers but will have lower battle potential when powered up. Such options can be great for saving Stardust.

For example, let’s start by scrolling through a species and checking all of our level 30, 5k dust Pokemon. Now, as soon as we scroll to a Pokemon requiring 4500 dust, we know any 5k dust Pokemon will have lower IV. We can skip those and only check 4500 dust options. When we see our first Pokemon that requires 4k dust to power up, we know that any 5k or 4500 dust Pokemon will be lower IV and can skip those again.

It is also worthwhile to develop a naming system that you can easily recognize. Use a symbol, letter, or word to designate Pokemon for trading. Abbreviate key appraisal phrases in a way you can remember so you know which to IV check and don’t appraise the same Pokemon multiple times. After using an IV calculator for key Pokemon, remember to rename (so you can decide what to evolve), transfer, or just evolve the Pokemon.

Let others know about high IV and CP Torchic you find. It’s about community after all, so pay attention to local chats where others may share high IV finds and help grow your community too by sharing your finds.

Looking Forward

When Torchic’s Community Day is over, there are still plenty of opportunities to get good Blaziken with the exclusive move through trading. Evolving extra Blaziken can be a great idea to attempt to trade with friends afterward for high IV rerolls.

Lucky Friendship is a total game changer for exclusive movesets. Interacting with Best Friends can now create Lucky Friendships! This will make your next trade a guaranteed Lucky! One of the best uses for these trades will be shiny Pokemon, rare Pokemon, and Pokemon with exclusive legacy movesets. CD brings all three! For this reason, evolving extra shiny Torchic gives you the perfect Lucky Trade fodder. Encourage your Best Friends to do the same.

Using up all your Torchic candy on evolutions gives you an additional incentive to catch future Torchic, which will then allow you to power them up and unlock additional moves.

It’s not too late to find some high IV Torchic too. Whether it be Torchic in your collection you didn’t notice/have the time to evolve during CD or new ones you catch, December is likely to have another CD weekend where exclusive moves become available again. If you don’t manage to find a good Torchic worthy of your Stardust this weekend, evolve some anyways, attempt some lucky trades (on evolved and unevolved), keep looking, and evolve some in December! Note: This event is not confirmed for December, it's just what happened in 2018.

Get Kickin / Have a Blast

This was written before the move was announced so I wasn’t sure which punny send off to title this section. I went with both and looks like we won’t have to change it. There’s a lot going on this CD, the first to add 2 new moves to an existing Pokemon- and “New Moves” cost Stardust.

Stardust is a key commodity in Pokemon Go. Whether you’re into trading, raiding, or PvP, you’ll want to break a Star Piece or six this CD to make the most out of your Pokemon Go experience.

Some may be catching their first Torchic, obtaining their Gold Fire Badge, evolving their first Blaziken, or filling out their Fire team to take on Raid Battles and Arena Cups. Triple Stardust allows you to stock up and take on all the exciting challenges PokemonGo has to offer.

Those with limited time can still get a lot out of Community Day and those willing to can make use of a grinding hard during this event. Blaziken is an extremely powerful Pokemon regardless of its exclusive move.

For those looking for an additional challenge/achievement to unlock this Community Day, I’ll just add that Torchic is an incredibly fun Pokemon to attempt double and triple bounces on while it runs back to into position during its attack animation.
