What is going on with this event?
I finally found a larvitar again today since like a week ago.
It would be great if Niantic released a rock event someday where I could catch some larvitars smiles. Yeah that would be great.

Seriously, what is happening? Instead of larvitars there are geodudes, shuckles and slugmas!?
Ohh I'am sorry I didn't realize slugma was a rock pokemon...
Shuckles, what am I suppose to do with those?

Larvitars is not all that is missing. Where are those Onix? Anyone? No?

I haven't seen any Larvitar this week either, mostly Geodude, Kabuto & Omanyte (Omastar was one of the two Gen1's I didn't have before this week, so I'm satisfied there.) Probably about 2-3 Onix a day too. For me though, this week is all about the reduced walking distances for candy and less about the increased rock spawns.
I think everyone has some kind of "good reasons", a lot will say that they are not going to give us a lot of rare mons, yes, I agree, but you can't disagree with the fact that this kind of events are worth almost nothing is the "only" rare mon that EVERYONE wants has its spawns only increased on their actual biomes, for people on other biome than the normal Larvitar spawn the only thing we are seeing is a sea of Slugma, with a good amount of Geodude, ocassional Rhyhorn, rare Onix, and ultra rare Aerodactyl, Larvitar is close to zero if not zero on a ton of areas.
For me putting Slugma is a bad joke, just like that, it seems like Niantic is laughing at my face saying you waited for a rock event, I am gonna make your life a Slugma event for a week, and this is not cool at all...If a lot of people is enjoying more the 4x buddy candy than the actual type event then something has been bad done with it, this is my opinion.
Anyway, enjoy the rest of the event, walk a lot and take advantage of the 4xbuddy candy, another one will come, and I would not make any hopes on any future type event, it is a mistake I have learned the hard way, I have played a lot during this event, 1 Larvitar found in total in more than 3 hours per day of playing without stop walking around, I have at least got a lot of Snorlax candy for my buddy.
Let's be realistic...the only pokemon that really want are Tyranitar, Dragonite, Blissey, and Snorlax...maybe Lapras. Based on this, every event is basically worthless if we are only looking at the pokemon in them. I personally believe it would wreck the game if events made it incredibly easy to get rare pokemon. Isn't it enough that you get 4 times the candy?
And that is really the point of these events...stardust and reduced distance on buddies...and I liked the egg changes during the other event.
No serious player cares about the pokemon in these events. The more casual players should be thrilled they can get some of the top attackers and defenders in the game over the last 2 events (Rhydon, Golem, Exeggutor.)
I'm a pretty hardcore player and I am extremely grateful for the last few events. I hatched a 100% Lapras from a 2k egg, banked over 400 Exeggutor candies (with some high level Exeggcute to evolve,) evolved another Venusaur and my first Megnaium, more than enough candies to finish maxing my other 2 Rhydons, as well as Rhyhorns to make some more, enough candies for a couple more Golems, and those few extra candies for Steelix. Hell, throw in that I can have a few more tries on Omastar and Kabutops. AND with this event I can walk my Lapras to get the required candies.
Hearing people whine about these events makes me hope Niantic stops doing them because it just makes people seem ungrateful. If Niantic did a Blissey event, these same people would complain afterwards about how gyms are filled with Blissey. You just can't please some people.
I agree with almost everything you stated, but you have to look the game from a casual player perspective, if you are hardcore and can do it nice, but most of people can't, I would say 90% of players can't, people have jobs, studies, family and other things to do.
This game either you like it or not is a mobile game, and was not designed to be played 8 hours per day.
And if you don't play on an extremely lucky or high dense area chances are you probably have not even got a Pupitar yet, I knew people that after 1 year playing just get their first Dragonite..
I am not saying that Larvitar should spawn like Pidgey, but this is a ROCK event, not a Slugma one, 95% of my spawn are Slugma, do you find this good? Of course if it does not affect you why bother right? But I know for fact that a lot of players are on the same boat I am, getting 1 larvitar in a week of a rock event, playing everyday 3 hours or more, is not an increase rock type spawn by anyway.
I think a good number should be at least 1 per day, that is 7 on the week, don't think this is game breaking at all at this point. For me the difference between hardcore and casual should be the dust, not the candies, it is not fair at all, I have seen people screenshots with 3 Larvitar out of 9 spawn on their nearby, and this without speaking of their HUGE mistake during the first hours of the event, while a lot where taking advantage catching like 20 Larvitar in an hour just because their fail and being on an specific biome.
Events should never be biome related, that makes them not being enjoyful enough, and brings down the hype in less than 8 hours for the whole duration of the event.
Problem is that if they increase larvitar spawn so that you could catch sufficient amount of them just by walking by, people with scanners will catch dozens (if not hundreds) per day. If you could catch only ten per day with scanner, you'll probably get nothing or couple without scanner during this week.
Another big mistake, looking at cheaters to decide if the other players can have fun or not. It is not my fault if a cheater using a tracker can get hundreds per day, they will do it anyway, this kind of events are a chance to balance a bit between us and them, not the otherway, they already have thousands of Larvitar, Dratini, Chansey and anything else candies, most of us don't.
The same happens with updates, we can't get trading, we can't get pvp, we can't get legendaries, a lot of reasoning behind not having those features, cheaters, spoofers, people that would benefit from them, so in order to make them not benefit we can't get them? I am sorry but I do not buy some arguments.
