So what is the ideal buddy now ?

As Niantic introduced Community Day, I think taking those 10km evolvable pokemon as buddy is no longer the best choice except for some specific cases like pokedex entry or power up for some gen3 pomemons I guess. For me, chansey and togepi could be giod choices. But considering the current gym system and the rarety of the candy, togepi will be my choice. So just want to listen to your opinions, maybe we have better choices ?

Chansey may be the best long-term buddy as she is unlikely to be featured in Community Day.

Downvotes from low turnover players.
Obviously low turnover players know nothing about hardcore GRB defense

Yup, anyone who negates Blissey's superiority and mandatory usefulness lives in a very boring and stale gym scene

I disagree. 10km evolvable pokemon can still be walked before (or even after) CDs! I am a firm believer that one should always have a 372 candy stock (124 evolve+248 max out) for all the pseudo legendaries.

After my Dratini day adventures I evolved 6 level 30-35 dratini and then still needed candy to maximise my 1. Shiny Dragonite, 2. Draco meteor 98%, 3. Legacy DB/DC. 4. Hurricane Dragonite. As you can tell that is a lot of candy expenditure (at least 1000). I am still looking for dratini candy.

I have a stock of 550 Larvitar candy right now but that could be gone with 4 good Ttar evolutions at high level right away next month.

As of right now I am alternating walks between salamence and beldum to achieve the stock levels I set as a goal above.

I'm still sticking to Larvitar for now (yeah, I know community day will be lit, but my first course of action is to get a high IV with the new move). BUT I did just come off of a nice run with Togepi in preparation for his Gen 4 evolution. I shy away from Legendaries and I'm good on Feebas for now, so if it wasn't Larvitar it would probably be Chansey or Ralts (another future evolution candidate). There aren't too many non-legendary meta-relevant mons out there ATM and I don't know what the Alolan candies situation is/will be.

Currently walking Bagon until I've maxed Salamence. Am struggling after that, have enough mons to cope with any raid situation, have loads of candy in prep for gen 4 & afew Blisseys at high level for gyms. Don't like the 20 kms per Legendary candy but maxing Legendaries is where I'm at so will probably go with that til we have some fresh blood to go at.

Togepi hands down, only 3 km per candy and don’t want to spend Rare candies on it

Chansey can’t be on Community Day. It’s first evolution has not been released yet. Once Gen 4 hits, then Happiny could be featured. I’m guessing all will be a three stage evolution. So Trapnich, Slakoth, Ralts, Beldum, etc will be eventually unless they stop Community Day down the road for something different.

20km for a legendary is too high for me when I can get rare candy from raiding so I will stick with the 10km egg evolvables. I am not going to ignore current needs just because there may be a community day some unknown time down the road.

Also, given that I have now burnt through all of my dragonite candy from that community day, the fact that I may get a lot of candy doesn't mean that I will not need more of it at some point.

I was walking a larvitar before the announcement and I switched to my bagon.

The fact that almost all of my 10km eggs have been trapinchs lately doesn't help much either.

Ttar still could be worth walking. If it will really get rock fast move then you should aim for team of 6 with new move. It's 750 candies to evolve only. Probably you'll evolve at least 2-3 high iv hatches, it's 200-750 more candies to power up.
So ttar case is differ from dragonite's

Other than that togepi could worth walking.

I don't think the upcoming community day is a reason to stop walking Larvitar. If the move is indeed SD, the event creates more demand for candy than it provides supply. You need 739 minimum to evolve a full squad and then probably another 248/496/744 to max your best ones.

Personally I'm good with 1,4k Larvitar candy in stock so I'm walking Chansey until my gym defense team is where I need it to be. After I'm done there I'll walk Ralts or Togepi.

To complete the Dex. Everything else doesnt make sense to me.
Machop —> so much candy since weather, Raids available
Dratini —> there was an event
Larvitar —> event coming + Raids
Legendaries —> 20km is too much
Others —> lets be honest: not worth it

Edit: Chansey is a terrible idea. Just saying...

Why is Chansey a terrible idea? Is gym defence irrelevant in your area? There are many areas with highly competitive gyms that require good defenders and Golden Razzberry feeding to earn coins.

Chansey is one of the best buddies in areas with an active gym scene. I have 6 Blisseys (3 maxed) myself and it's not enough. I know a person with 9 maxed Blisseys who doesn't think it's enough.

Don't worry, you'll eventually get to a point where walking anything other than chansey or legendaries will sound crazy. It is very, very close to the endgame and it takes an equally hardcore gym scene, but it happens. Play for long enough and you'll find out that no Metagross or Salamance surpasses having more than 2 Rayquaza or Kyogre being invested in simultaneously.

I am currently walking Snorlax as I am working on some favorites to max. Rare candies are for legendaries. Otherwise having enough candies in stock for maxing the pseudo legends isn't a bad idea.

Depending on your area:
Beldum (extremely rare in my area)
Bagon (extremely rare in my area)
Ralts (inconsistently uncommon in my area)
Tangela (inconsistently rare in my area)

Potentially a good idea:
Togepi (depends on Togekiss in the future, but... )

Situationally Dependent:
Eevee (Umbreon/Esperon evolutions, or if there are few Eevee's in your area)
Wailmer (400 candy evolution may be needed in next Mythic quest)
Magikarp (400 candy evolution may be needed in next Mythic quest)
Swablu (400 candy evolution may be needed in next Mythic quest)
Chansey (Depending on the gym scene in your area)
Lotad (Only seems to show up in my area when it's literally raining, not just Rainy weather. Dunno how it knows that it's literally raining nearby, but I get wet and BAM! Lotad shows up minutes later.)
Starter Pokémon from Gen 2 and 3: (If you need the candies for the Dex entries; these never seem to show up with any predictability. In any generation actually; when it rains near me, I almost always see a bunch of Charmander spawning right next to a canal near where I live. Mudkip showed up when it Snowed. Torchic showed up in Extreme Cold weather. Squirtle and Chikorita don't exist in my world except at absolute, textbook random. Cyndaquil is a Level 1 Raid Boss only (like Absol and Mawlie), and there's that one place where Totodile spawned like Pidgeys for a week then vanished forever, so it's not technically like Absol and Mawlie but it might have been a Niantic server glitch, so...)

Because why not?
Wynaut

Because I'm Trolling someone
Suicune
Latias
Ratatta
Weedle
Snorlax
Pidgey

Because I happened to FINALLY hatch a %93+, Attack 15:
Geodude
Rhydon

Because it looks funny:
Shuckle

Because I let my daughter choose:
Mew
Mewtwo
