Question about spoofing...

Some context:

So today I had gone to a heatran raid and was waiting at the gym just before raid was about to start. I looked around and couldn't see anyone nearby, so I was thinking I was going to miss out on this one when the egg hatched. There were 7 people in the lobby and when I threw my raid pass in there were 14 people.

I looked around a lot and there were absolutely no pokemon go players nearby. So 13 spoofers and I took down a heatran.
(I checked and it was me, in valor, 1 in instinct and 12 in mystic).

This was at a pair of gyms close together, so I attacked the other one with an old man that had just arrived with two phones. Both of us were Valor. Everything is going well until we arrive at the last pokemon to take out. The battles about to start for both of us when it glitches out for both of us and says "this battle has already been completed". Less than two seconds later, it's a mystic gym (it was under instinct before) with 5 lvl 40 pokemon. I checked and there was absolutely none but us there.

Both of us were confused as to how this happened, but it was probably spoofers doing their thing.

I talked with him for a few minutes after that and he remarked on how playing with one phone in pokemon go is "no fun", and that you need at least two phones to have fun and stand a chance in gyms against other multi-accounters and spoofers.

tldr: Won a raid with a bunch a spoofers and lost a gym to bunch of spoofers as well. Some guy advised me to multi-account.

So my question: Is Niantic doing anything do disincentivise these guys so they wouldn't want to do these things (multi-account and spoof) in the first place? I mean with respect to gyms and raids. There might be people who spoof for pokestops, but those are a lost cause.

I have asked around and the main reason people do this stuff is because of raids and gyms (which I think are a part of a stupid system anyway). So is Niantic considering doing anything? Or do people not care now?

I mean when pokemon go first came out there weren't people running around with more than one phone (at least I don't think so), so why is it not fun to play with one phone anymore?

I have one phone one account lvl 40 and that is fun enough for me. Spoofers and multi-accounter's ruin the game IMO.

Niantic is pretty much unable to detect multi-account/device holders and it is a problem. If everyone had 2 red accounts only 3 people could be in one red gym at a time. And those with 2 opposing team/accounts can shave gyms; that is attack a red gym with their yellow account to kick one pokemon out then put one of their red account mons in.

My real life is too much fun to waste time and money cheating at PoGo.

Whilst I don't condone it one bit, I guess there will always be spoofers, some who are too lazy to get out there & some who live in remote places where it is impossible to play the game as Niantic wants. It's no fun waiting around for others who may or may not help you in a raid or seeing your Pokémon sitting on your one gym for days/weeks while you receive no coins. City dwellers are the first to call out people for doing things against the TOS to play this game but some don't really have a choice if they want to carry on playing. Some YouTubers are still making videos on spoofing so if they aren't getting banned then that in itself is a green light for some. Multi accounting in these areas is pretty much standard & I don't blame them. What people have to remember is that not all places in the world are Pokémon Go friendly & is it fair to exclude trainers based on where they live?

Pokemon Go is a weird game in that respect, never seen a popular mobile/computer game that exclude/penalize loads of people depending on where they live.

When that is said, I doubt the majority of spoofers/multi accounters live in remote areas. I wish the amount of TOS-abuse would have given Niantic a hint that something may be wrong with some of the basic concepts in the game. But that is probably a false hope.

You can report spoofers in your area so Niantic are aware.

What you may do next time: install a free screen recorder on your phone (AZscreen recorder or similar), record the raid/gym being attacked and switch to your phone camera showing that there's nobody in the surrounding. You may also screenshot the names in the gym once they finished taking it.

Then, go to the game settings> report critical issue > someone is cheating > I'm at this gym and nobody is around. Describe the situation, attach the video and screenshots. They only take one report per cheater, so you may have to create one report per spoofer.

Niantic won't cancel their accounts immediately, but they will flag them. If they recur the infraction their accounts will be banned temporary first and permanently eventually if they didn't stop spoofing. Good luck with that.

Theres really nothing that can be done to disincentive spoofing and multi accounting short of if 2 accounts are close together for a very long time, like multiple hours, you cant raid/trade or such, but even then not every person who alt accounts and spoofs has both accounts on 24/7. If something's added to the game, by nature having more of it will incentivize playing more. The only thing I think could disincentivise it aside from CD's/Raid days where using 2 phones actually makes you catch a lot less pokemon.

Theres not really anything that can be done.

Spoofers could be ignored by players, but spoofers try and try to be noticed. They take 5-10 gyms at a time and put several lackeys in to strengthen. If you get the gym, 2 minutes later the spoofer will take it back.

Multi-accounts isn't cut and dry, people/friends in your town probably know you don't need them for daily PvP rewards so they don't regularly challenge you. In that case, entertainmentwise PvP turns into testing different pokemon and seeing how they charge up relative to a different one. Trading aspect is a huge multi plus, a bad IV level 35 spheal is a great catch...not so much if the only goal was to give that level 35 water balloon to someone else (usually not somebody else near saving high level tweeners to trade to you).

When I was talking about things incentivizing multi accounting I was meaning trading, luckies, raid, friendship bonuses. All those encouraged multi accounting before PvP was even added, there wasnt anything PvP added that was specifically unigue to it to incentivize multi accounting, If you have a list of friends, you likely are in communication with them an can schedule PvP battles as most are likely ultra or best friends at this point for long distance battles.

Personally I dont have much of a problem with multi accouters so long as they arent malicious with it, I dont mind if they use it just for trading for distance candy easier, making raids more reliably beatable. If they use their alt/s for gym packing and the GRB spam, thats where the issue is.

A good number of people have family/extra accounts to avoid discord/facebook. Not to say they won't try to gather a raid group if they see other players at a park, but skipping raid chats can help you miss some other new aspects (PvP). Eventually (now for me) there is just nothing left to trade for, I want stardust most so I'm rarely happy about catching on a different account, just to spend stardust to trade for it.

Fair point, that is something that does discourage alt accounting, similar to how CD and raid days are.

Multi-accounting isn't just people with multiple accounts under different teams (mystic, valor, etc) who use them for raids and shaving gym spaces for themselves.

Where I work, many of the group of people that I raid with bring multiple devices to raids. However, when they use "extra" accounts, most of them are of people in our group that couldn't make it to the raid but trust the other person with their account info. Others use accounts of young relatives that are happy to see new pokemon in their collection when they log in intermittently.

Unless you don't think someone should be allowed to play for someone else's account, I don't see anything being done about this.
