Gym defender instantly halved

Hi!

Recently, I've found that the defenders I put into a gym will have their CP slashed almost in half very fast. Like 30 minutes. This has happened several times recently and regardless of the gym being "pre-owned" by my team or if I took it down myself.

I am positive that no one battled the gym.

Does anyone know why this is happening or have you experienced anything similar?

Place a pidgey in there and let us know if the CP is halved in 30 min.
probably just normal CP decay.

Pidgey has fought hard and returned! 0 coins.

I had a 200cp Finneon defend a gym for 2 hours by itself two days ago. Gotta love winter.

Did you feed the first berry to them after placing them? High CP defenders can seem like they lost a big chunk very fast if they don't start from actual full motivation.
But if it's actual half motivation after 30 minutes, the only explanation is somebody fought them once. No defender decays that fast.

I did feed a berry, yes. This is what it looked like. It's higher than half, but I didn't think they demotivated this fast. You can see it has 0 battles.
