Feebas Buddy Distance... decreasing?

I started walking a Feebas yesterday and noticed losing distance on it in 5km packages, happened 3 times so far - is this a known mechanic or just a really weird bug? Never heard of that happening..

And no, this isn't my imagination, I kept track over my walked distance the whole day because I was trying to create a new personal record for distance walked in a single day.
