Boulder Cup, Rhyperior?

I have a 15/14/15 rhydon, a boatload of candy, a sinnoh stone, and a gleam in my eye.

If I evolve this guy, currently level 8, power it up 6 levels, it'll be a lvl 14, CP 1490 Stony DeVito.

Is this wise? Cool , yes. A surprise at this bracket, yes. But, I'm asking you folks, is it meta-wise or just a foolish entry and, worst case, waste of a team slot?

(I would, of course, give it the secondary charge move so probably have Mud Slap, Earthquake, and Surf. Rhyhorn is common here so candy is no issue.)

Thoughts?

Considering they have the same moves and typing, Im pretty sure a 1490 Rhydon would perform better than the Rhyperior so maybe just level up instead of evolve. The reason would be that I think percentage wise Rhydon gets less of its CP from Atk than Rhyperior does. Honestly there may not be much of a difference at all and a pretty small one if there is.

I doubt that either is a particularly great performer though.

Oh good point. I wonder how I can figure out which would have more overall stats at the same CP, regardless of level. Maybe a higher level rhydon has higher stats? Or maybe perior's boosted stats come out equally and it comes down to a dust vs stone consideration.

The difference is quite small between Rhydon and Rhyperior, Rhydon has 34% of its stats in attack while Rhyperior has 35%. Rhyhorn is actually superior to both in Great league from a stat perspective, it only has 30% of its total stats in attack and can reach 1500 cp. The movesets are different though.

Rock types in general are crap in the Boulder cap. They are weak to everything and all other Boulder types resist them. Add to that rhyperior is going to be very glassy at that CP. it's only real use would be with rock moves against skarmory, assuming skarmory doesn't carry FC as second move, if you can force that matchup.

Not a good idea. Mud Slap isn't a good fast move and Rhyperior's typing is quite bad, it's vulnerable to so many things and in particular loses to Mudboys, Medicham and all other fighting types that people may bring in to counter Skarmory counters. It has some advantageous matchups, like Melmetal and Magneton, but there are vastly better pokemon available that demolish those matchups, like the aforementioned mudboys (Whiscash, Marshtomp, Quagsire).
