Am I screwed from getting Mew?

So way back when I first started playing this game, I remember the game defaulting to AR mode and I wanted to try it out, but I could never find where the pokemon was. I gave up on AR mode pretty quickly and never bothered with it again up until recently. Apparently, Mew can only be caught in AR mode so I gave it another try but it still does not seem to be working and I am given this message a few seconds after turning it on. Is there anything that can be done or am I locked out of getting Mew?

Granted I caught mine a few weeks ago, but I got the same message and it carried Mew to a half AR/half animated catch screen where I awkwardly threw 2 balls, Mew jumped out, then I caught it. Pretty sure everyone catches it in the same way whether they can “enjoy the AR” or almost blindly throw the balls

I'm pretty sure that's how the catch sequence is supposed to go, so it sounds like I might get lucky then.

Of course I still need to find that Ditto first.

Forget AR if you really want Mew. I had the glitch on a Samsung Galaxy S7. Was finally able to see the little beastie by re-installing the app and electing to NOT include the AR feature. My Mew was a 97%, good luck.

Edit: Ditto is common around shopping centers.

SOLUTION:
I signed in to a different device (with working AR). Caught my mew 14/12/12! Then logged out from that device. Now i am playing in my regular old device with no further need of AR. So just ask for help from a friend or someone you know!

From what I've read, you do not actually need AR mode to catch Mew

I don't know about Android, but on iOS I have not given permission to PoGo to use my camera. There is no AR toggle switch on the catch screen and it never tries to go into AR mode.

When I start the Mew encounter, it brings up this message, but tapping the button starts the encounter anyway on the normal background.

I'm still waiting to catch it, but see no reason why it will not work.

On iOS, I can change the app permissions in system settings, in the app specific settings. Try looking for some similar settings on Android?

You could ask a friend or relative with a good phone to catch it on.
