So I'm new(ish) to PoGo and wasn't in the game for last year's St. Patrick's Day. Did they do any sort of event for that, and do you think they will do anything this year? I'm wondering if I should save some of the trades I have planned until the holiday, in case they do some kind of increased lucky chance or something to do with St. Patty's.
There was no event for it last year.
The game is equally (or even more) popular in urban Asia (notably Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong) than the West. Unlike Christmas, Easter and Halloween, St. Patrick's Day is virtually unknown in Asia. I suspect Niantic began celebrating the Lunar New Year due to feedback from Asian players.
