Why is Exeggutor still so highly rated here?

I have noticed that Exeggutor still holds a top spot as both attacker and defender? Why is that exactly?

The only reason I can think of for Exeggutor still being a top defender is that there aren't any decent Fire type attackers (Arcanine is gg), although the recent buffed Pinsir absolutely wrecks Exeggutor.

And Exeggutor as an attacker... plain sucks. Exegg has a subpar base attack stat, doesn't even have a grass type quick move (Alakazam is much better for pure Psychic attack), and don't even get me started on how slow Zen Headbutt is, and how awkward it is to dodge when using Zen Headbutt...

So why is it so highly rated on both Tier lists?

Destroys the most prevalent mon - Vaporeon

Prevalent is an understatement. Vaporeons comprise probably 90% of gym defenders I see since the last update. No real problem since my Exeggutors and Venusaur lead my team for these. I love my Exeggutors.

1.95x with charged grass move towards Rhydon (which became extremely popular after the update) & Golem

Gym Attackers hasn't yet been updated for the Ditto patch.

If you're used to spam attacking (i.e., tap the screen as fast as possible), Zen Headbutt won't work for you; it takes a little getting used to to get into a rhythm. But Solar Beam is absolute killer on attack against pure water types (Vaporeon) and against Gyarados.

Good point, thanks for calling it out. I love how 2 of you were so quick to jump on that :-)

I do attack into Exeggutor with Gyarados at times (spamming Bite is great). I hadn't realized that Gyarados is not weak to grass...

Who else would you match up against Gyarados? Jolteon is too wimpy for my taste...

"subpar base attack stat" compared to what? Assuming the Pokemon List Advanced page on this site is up to date (and I believe it is), Exeggutor is in the top 10 (number 9) among the Pokémon currently available. It's certainly best of the grasses.

Exeggutor only went down ~40cp. And it was pretty big to begin with. It was nerfed, but not that badly.

I personally don't really like Exeggutor on attack.

On defense, the reason he's still really high despite getting nerfed is pretty much as follows.
1. Confusion + Psychic. Almost nothing resists that... at all. The few that do are going to be attacking with Psychic Moves as well which Exeggutor resists.
2. None of his counters are that great. Arcanine got nerfed and a bunch of HIS counters got buffed. Pidgeot is the same story.
3. His double weakness to bug should spell doom for him as a defender. However no bug can get Mega Horn (bug version of Hydro Pump/Solar Beam). The top 2 bugs can't get Bug Bite and Fury Cutter is terrible. The next 2 bugs are poison and take SE damage from Exeggutor. The best bug that gets a good moveset and doesn't take SE damage from Psychic is Butterfree, who has a pathetic max CP of 1701.

Why is fury Cutter terrible? It may not have the best DPS but it's super fast and makes it really easy to dodge. In addition, X-Scissors is so fast that you can use it between two confusions.
I have to add that I never had a comparable Pokémon with bug bite so i can't say how much worse fury cutter really is.
