What is this gym technique?

I live within sight of a gym and I'm on Team Mystic. It was level 10 15 minutes ago. I watch the level go down steadily and I walk over to the gym - no one's there. I can't prestige it up at the same rate so it goes down to zero. Immediately, 2 high CP pokemon appear in the gym, on Team Instinct and one 10 CP Rattata. Then the prestige shoots up AT AN INCREDIBLE RATE. I fight the 10 CP Rattata over and over and over again, but the level of the gym won't go down. In fact, all I'm doing is slowing how quickly the gym prestige shoots up! Finally, it reaches level 10 and I keep fighting the Rattata until the trainer (who isn't there - no one is there but me) stops. I take it down to level 9 easily and wonder:

What the hell just happened? Is there a name for this?

Should I report these 10 trainers to Niantic, who literally just took over another gym in sight of my house between the time I posted this question and this reply?

That's teamwork. Several trainers all working at once can take a gym from 10-0-10 in minutes.

And, of course, spoofing.

Are you sure? I have never heard of any bots that takes gyms down then trains gyms up like this. But I know it can be teamwork.

I've read too many anecdotes like this one to believe that it's not a bot. At the very least, there is automation to place a bubblestrat defender into an empty gym slot, then prestige it up. Spoofers may then take the available slots.

I had a similar same issue a while back. with some Instinct players. I walked away from the 4 gyms in that town and just found new ones. Not worth the time and hassle unless playing with a group.
