Power up a level 1 Lapras?

Never hatched a Lapras, but caught a few with bad IVs or move sets, as well as a Frost Breath / Blizzard, 89% IV (I think) but that's only level 1 (41cp). Should I power this guy up??

It would take around 130 candy to get it to level 30. That's a big investment of rare candy. Not even considering the dust.

130 x 5km, good luck bro hahahaha just kidding, lapras is so rare in my area, that if i've found one with perfect moveset and good IV like yours, i would keep and power it up eventually

Powering up a level 1 Lapras to Level 20 (to match a egg hatch) costs 47,500 stardust and 58 Lapras candies.

58 candies would get a hatched Lapras to level 30, so I would rather just hold onto them until I hatch one.

It's good advice but I'm just not convinced I'll ever hatch one, especially with this move set.

Safe bet would be to just walk till you can get enough candy to power it up to level 30 then.

If you don't catch or hatch one by then, power it up then since it's now a level 30 Lapras and rather strong. I assume you have other ice attackers already so can live without it.

I've noticed after filling most of my dex for exp parties and new dex entries, I only walk with 2 or 3 other mons now for powering up (Snorlax, Dratini, Lapras).

Don't have a Snorlax or Dragonite yet though so I haven't started walking much with the low level/bad IV ones I do have...Also don't have Porygon.

Actually, I will walk again with Chansey and if it's CP is projected to be what it is, plan to eventually max a Lvl 2 one with 95-98% IVs. Would be glorious! :)

But I could also power up along the way to prestige against Dragons? Anyway, he is my new buddy...

I'll give you a Porygon any day once trades start. I didn't even bother to walk a block today to get one since I have some many already.

Agree with ironman here. When you do have enough candies, it is worth powering up. What you don't want happening is powering it up as soon as you get candies, and then end up getting a higher level Lapras in an egg or one in the wild, and then wishing you used the candies you spent partially powering up this level 1 Lapras on your new one instead.

Sure it might not have the exact same moveset, but Lapras has other good movesets too.

The difference between Frost Breath and Ice Shard isn't as big as say, the difference between Dragon Breath and Steel Wing on Dragonite for example.

Both of Laprases quick moves are usable on attack and defense, but one is slightly better than the other, that's all. Same with Blizzard and Ice Beam. You can use an IS/IB Lapras on attack and an FB/B on defense and they'd still perform fairly close to the best moveset.

Dragon Pulse isn't a bad move, it's just a bad move in comparison, kind of like comparing Earthquake on Snorlax to it's other two moves. It's still going to be better than most Pokemon that have their best movesets.

Yeah, this is why most folks would not bother doing the partial power up thing. It's mostly to avoid hatching or catching a better one in the wild (prob never :) ) and having ended up wasting the candies since you'd spend it on the new one instead.

Unless your mon was 100% and had the perfect movesets which would make it very unique and impossible to find in the wild or from a hatch/evolve, then waiting is usually the better option since, assuming for you and most folks, you already have other ice options if needed.

If I had an IS/Blizzard or FB/Blizzard Lapras with really high IVs, I'd actually power it all the way to 39/40 eventually. Just that the stardust (I have a lot actually) and candies (very limited here currently) makes it less of a priority compared to other mons for me (like Chansey) since I still need more defenders.

Lapras will fall further in the CP rankings when Gen 2 is out (going from 6 to 10) so it's chance to be in ANY gyms will be even lower soon (sad since I have 2).

120 buddy candy is very very valuable and hard earned. Id rather power up 2-3 mons with high CP low IV then have one very nice Lapras. Plus the moveset on yours isnt great for defending and for attack Cloyster is a great sub to use temporarily.

It sounds to me like you're wanting someone to tell you to power this awesome pokemon up! If stardust is no problem, and you're ready to walk what it takes to get the candies... why not? It's a great pokemon and you will be proud of it in the end. My only concern is by the time you walk enough to get this done you'll be interested in something else and tired of dealing with it.

In my case I would power him up for sure, make my buddy and WALK! I already have 2 maxed dragonites at my level and 1 snorlax but never found a wild Lapras, he is the only mon I have never found in the wild, it is so rare that for me it's worth the investment, you got the best attacking moveset, a really good IV, why not do it?

By the way, moveset for me means the world, I have hatched 2 lapras in those 6 months of playing, both of them with Dragon Pulse, so it is not easy to get best moves in my experience.

It is your decisition but I personally would trade one of my level 20-30 Dragonite for your level 1 Lapras just to have something amazing to invest in :D

I had a cp 43 snorlax 93% iv. Walked my butt of and he is 2812 cp. That's my dedicaron for this snorlax. I think you should do the same for lapras, dragonite killler with good moveset a. Plus what else are you going to power up? I only see powerinup snorlax dragonite and lapras, maybe executtor but you can catch them. What else can you power up. I have only seen on lapras in my life and hatched 2 in my life. So lapras aren't that common to wait for the better one lol.

Maybe we're in the minority, but I'm in agreement with you...If you have tons of defenders already and limited dust, then maybe you shouldn't power it up...but if you are swimming in dust and have little/no defenders, then Snorlax is an easy decision for me as well since most things, you don't need to walk anyways (can catch in the wild) and Snorlax will sit high up in gyms to replenish the dust eventually...

Just prioritize based on your needs and if you have nothing to walk with, just start walking with the Lapras...

Dratini's are good too due to high CP, but they do spawn in various areas so they might be easier to farm (I caught 2 in like 3 hours 1 day by the beach).

This is an attacking Lapras, and therefore I wouldn't spend the candy / dust to power him up. Lapras candy is rare, and you'll feel stupid when you get a good Defense moveset Lapras, and you've got no candy to max him out
