Nanab berry > golden razz berry?
So I did two raids yesterday. But before doing those raids, I reached level 35. And I was given all these items. My item box was past maxed out. I was like 40 items over.
So I did a Zapdos raid and after we beat it, I didn't get a single golden razz berry! The only thing I had was the Pinap berry and the Nanab berry. I was like, what the hell, I tried the Nanab berry a few times. And on the 4th throw, I caught the Zapdos! I couldn't believe it.
Then a couple of blocks up was a Tyranitar raid. I had to delete a whole bunch of items as I was walking towards this raid. After we beat the raid, I did get golden razz berries, but I also got 14 balls to use. Tyranitar, for me, is one of the hardest Pokemon to catch. So knowing that I had 14 balls to use, I was like, what the hell, let me try the Nanab berry again. I used it and the Tyranitar didn't move a muscle. My biggest problem with Tyranitar was that he would attack as the ball was mid way in the air. I threw a "great" curve ball and I caught it on the first throw! I was shocked! Again, this is one of my hardest Pokemon to catch.
So was this because Nanab berry is that good or was it RNG? Thanks in advance.

Nanab has two effects:
- Reduce movement and attacks by about 90% until your next hit.
- Reduce movement and attacks by about 25% for the rest of the encounter after the hit.
If you are not good at timing or the pokemon is attacking way too much (like Tyranitar usually is) then Nanab berries can slow the pokemon down and make it easier to get great and excellent hits.
Sounds like it did exactly what it was supposed to for you, allowing you to hit a great curve throw. You were still pretty lucky that it stayed in that first throw.
Is this true that nanabs would have some effect (25% reduced movement) even after a failed capture in a post-raid encounter? In that case, wouldn't it make sound sense to use it on your first attempt (followed by golden razzes) with a pokemon (like tyranitar) that is prone to knocking several throws away with movement?
Someone at a raid told me the nanab berry works for 2 turns. I don't know. If it calms the Pokemon down by 25% for the rest of the time, it certainly makes sense to start off with the nanab berry.
Whether it's RNG or not, I'm going to try to always start with a nanab berry and then maybe a golden razz berry. For me to hatch one of the most difficult Pokemon with the first throw after using the nanab berry was just eye opening.
I heard about this at a raid, but didn't think too much of it. I'm always one of the last people to catch the Pokemon because I wait for the Pokemon to settle down and charge at me, before throwing the curved ball. For the most part, I end up catching the Pokemon. I don't know about this theory... But that's fantastic that he caught a 1898! I've got two 1886's and I have yet to catch a Zapdos with 15 attack. I got 9 Zapdos at the moment. Didn't raid today. Will 100% raid tomorrow with today's and tomorrow free raid passes.
Pretty bunk worthy, doubt my delayed ok helped...he said he is 7/7 catching Zapdos. I'm 7 for last 8, "missed" an 1839. I'm terrible at Lugia 3/10. I'm happy with my snags 1867 today, but have 1891, 1888, 1884, 1884, 1881, 1878 w/ 15a, etc. I get a TM every raid and 12-15 rare candy pretty easy reward
Yeah, Lugia is pretty hard for me to catch as well. I did a Lugia raid yesterday. I forgot how many balls I had, but majority of my throws were "excellent" curved throws and it kept jumping out. It ran away. It was low 2000's, so I didn't care too much. Would have been nice to catch it, but oh well. It wasn't meant to be.
