Jolteon as defender

From time to time, i see a real high level espeon as gym defender. They are a kind of glass cannon, but hurt a lot until defeated.

To do the pure math, Jolteon is not really worse. Slightly better on defense, considerably lower att-stat, but - better moves! VS hits harder than Confusion on defense [Correction: hits as hard, but generates much more energy, takes a bit more time, thanks to ClayMask!], Thunder Bolt hits harder than Psybeam. I expect the moves to compensate for the lower att-stat.

The interesting thing would be typing. The best type counter to Espeon would be a Bite-Trex - not everybody has it already. The best type-counter to Jolteon is Rhydon, virtually everybody has one.
But - do all attackers know and chose the correct type counters? Would they do in this case?

And the bigger Problem: Jolteon has lower CP than Espeon.

Is there anything to add to or to argue about my analysis?

Hi Bruno,

I agree with what you said above but your last sentence summed up everything perfectly well. It's just a question of CP to my humble opinion.

I often see Espeon here and there in mid-level gyms but haven't seen a Jolteon for a while. I sometimes put my VS/D in gym for fun when I can place him but he doesn't stay more than a few hours.

I have a level 38.5 espeon that I can place in some gyms around here, but no way would a jolteon have high enough CP. There is also the issue of counters that you mentioned, which is a big plus for the espeon.

Confusion and voltswitch both hit equally hard for 20 before adjustments, but voltswitch takes longer and generates more energy.

That all seems about right to me.

I would add a Scizor as another counter to Espeon but one with bug moves is about as rare as a Tyranitar so that doesn't change much anyway.

I put it in high turnover gyms like i used to put my bubble/ice punch poliwrath

I have two 90+IV level 22 and 23 Jolteons with V/D and V/Tb that I have been holding onto and been considering wasting stardust on one of them. Waiting on this mythical "gym update" that people have been speculating for far too long now.

Wise words.

Btw: Your Jolteon is not alone. In my box are some slowbro, tentacruel, steelix, cloyster, forretress, exeggutor, jolteon waiting for to be called.

As others have mentioned, my very good 91IV jolteon is only 2318 CP at level 30 so it won't win any CP wars, though in addition to the CP problem, mine also has the rather pathetic thunder shock/thunder for defense.

Doing some math you really have to push it really far to get jolt to some respectable CP, which in my opinion for the dusts costs are not worth it. A volt switch jolteon is definitely scary on defense though, I'll give you that, and it outright invalidates use of gyarados, vaporeon

This move set is a pain to attack. I have a VS/Dis Jolteon when I can place it off the bottom and not next to Vaporeon.
