Gyarados in Master League?

My love for Magikarp (and Gyarados) is no secret on this forum.

With Groudon gone, I use my maxed 15/14/15 Gyarados with WF/HP+Cr for gym defence and daily wins over Candela (the Electivire gets hit by HP before it can do much damage).

I rarely battle other trainers, but want to prepare teams, starting with Master League since the investments would also be useful for gyms and raids.

Is Gyarados good enough in Master League? If so:

1. I suppose WF/OR+Cr would be better than WF/HP+Cr? Would it also be better for gym defence? (Of course, I would have to find another strategy for Candela's Electivire.)

2. What would a team built around Gyarados look like? (Groudon is the most obvious partner.)

3. Any advice on shield and switching strategy with such a team?

The other species that I have maxed are:
1. Machamp, Ct/DP
2. Blissey, ZH/DG
3. Metagross, BP/MM
4. Tyranitar, Bi/Cr
5. Dragonite, DT/OR
6. Mamoswine, PS/Av
I have finally earned enough Rare Candy to consider maxing out my perfect Groudon (MS/EQ) and perfect Mewtwo (PC/IB).

Ive used one in masters a fair bit, does well in my experience, doesnt fear legacy dragonite as much as other dragon move carriers.

All its moves are good in my oppinion, HP's good against groudon/metagross/tyranitar, crunch for latios/lugia, outrage for latios, dragonite. But I'd recommend Hydropump and crunch.

Partners, i'd say mamoswine, much, much better as dismantling the dragons in my oppinion, defensively good against melmetal, and has better moves than groudon (though i'd recommend giving it bulldoze as a second move against meltetal and the occasional raikou). After that, Either metagross or Tyanitar (B/C + stone edge if possible), gyarados matches FB and SB mewtwo well (who's a bit rare and somewhat predictable as a late game sweeper who needs to be partnered with shield breakers early on to be threatening), walls groudon, and machamp and fire types are things you dont really need to worry about in masters

In one sense, Gary is a Kyogre that isn't quite as strong, but takes a lot less investment to get good. 10k dust and 25 easy to get candy for the second move instead of 100k dust and 100 hard to get candy. What really matters are the movesets.

Dragon Breath Gyarados are worth their weight in platinum, when paired with Outrage, as a dragon killer. Dragon Tail is tolerable, but not worth writing home about (the Dragon quick moves pretty much reverse position for PvP). Bite/Crunch is a good combination, but others do it better, with STAB. The double weakness to electric isn't as much of a problem in Master League, as most Electrics don't have the beef to play there well (a few can, but they are not optimal).

If you don't have Dragon Breath, Waterfall/HP/Crunch is very good. With Dragon Breath, DB/Outrage/(HP or Crunch) plays well. Better opposing Groudon than Kyogre, double resistance to ground.

In short, yes, it plays very well, and has a lot of moveset options that are good, although many of them are legacy.

Both have their strengths, kyogre's moves are stronger, but dont charge as fast (thunder does charge fast though).

But DB gyarados, oof, I wish I had one of those. Its unfortunate its best fast move is legacy, but its versatility is more than kyogre in my oppinion when looking at current moves

Before Raikou got SB and stopped being kept in check by the early king of the meta, Groudon, your Gyarados had a great opportunity to shine. But even then, for Gyarados to be serviceable in masters it needs a full dragon moveset (w/ 2nd attack).
It pairs well with Groudon and Mamoswine because they cover each other's weak spots. A third good option would include a dragon, Metagross, or maybe Mewtwo for pure raw power and coverage options.
