Dragonite vs. Alakazam

I've been working on getting an Alakazam with the optimal moveset (no luck so far after four evolutions) but I'm wondering... if I already have a high IV Dragonite with DB/DC, who pretty much destroys any Pokemon not named Lapras, is there any reason to get Alakazam? Are there any matchups where Alakazam greatly outperforms Dragonite?

Your Dragonite will still destroy a defending Lapras if you dodge all its move. Just not a good defender against an attacking Lapras. I'm still waiting for a good Alakazam so I couldn't compare.

I use my 3181 DB/DC Dragonite all the time but I've yet to try out my 2340 PC/Psy Alakazam (8th evolution). I want to try it again ZH Snorlax, but I don't think there is ever a time he's actually going to be better than Dragonite. The pokemon he resists also resist him, and the pokemon he gets type advantage against aren't all that strong anyway

8 evolutions?! Wow. You live near an Abra nest?

I agree, Dragonite simply has 70% more Stamina, which cannot be easily balanced e.q. by STAB or immunity, which is only 25%... Since relevant fighting is only Machamp, which has no good moves, you can use it against Snorlax, Lapras, Gengar and very universaly

Since relevant fighting is only Machamp, which
has no good moves,

and Poliwrath, who is a decent defender...

True, BUT Alakazam is not resistant to water, but fighting yes

Some thoughts to this topic:
(1) You will sometimes need a team of six attackers. If you don't have six dragonites, you will have to use other PKM too.
(2) On paper, damage output of alakazam is slightly higher than dragonites. This is not really relevant, because you have to dodge more with alakazam, who has a small life pool
(3) Alakazam has a different typing. This makes him an interesting option fighting poliwrath. He attacks super effective into polywrath due to poliwrath's fighting typing, whereas dragonite is in danger of polywrath's Ice punch.
(4) Alakazam is indeed useful to fight lapras. :-)
[Edit] (5) You don't even need the correct moveset, psycho cut is sufficient. It does so much damage, that a charge attack is not neccesairy, and dodging with fast psycho cut is even easyer when not using a charge attack. [/Edit]

Dragonite will be better against anything but Lapras.
But you probably sont have 6 offensive dragonite. So there is still room for Alakazam i think. I like him and animation is fun. But I cant get one with psycho cut after 4 try :(

I like animation too of alakazam, that's the only reason I like to use my only two (both sadly with Confusion) Alakazams as defenders

There is absolutely no point levelling up an Alakazam from a battling perspective, anything that it would be good against you could use a Psychic Slowbro or Exeggutor, it would do just as well if not better. From a collector's perspective though power it up if you have the spare dust, I know I did.

Strange... I don't have a Slowbro with Psycho Cut, not even with Zen Headbutt... and non of them has 2450 WP at Level 30. Could you be so kind and show me yours?

Strange, my Exeggutor is hurt by Polywrath's Ice-attack, my Alakazam is not.

Strange, my Alakazam has a clearly higher attack stat than Exeggutor, let alone Slowbro, and for me, killing Speed does matter.

Very, very strange...

For me, there is a point leveling Alakazam, I did it, and I now have a good Attacker into Poliwrath, Lapras and Snorlax. I know how to dodge and I love his killing speed.

  1. There is a Confusion/Psychic Slowbro, if you know how to dodge that's not an issue.
  2. Use Slowbro against Poliwrath not Exeggutor, they have the clear advantage here I don't know why you even used Exeggutor as the example.
  3. What's strange is that you seem to think Alakazam's lack of health compared to the other two doesn't matter, I can take out more of my opponent out with my 2200 Slowbro than my 2600 Alakazam.
  4. Again, there are better Pokemons to use against Poliwrath, Lapras and Snorlax than Alakazam, sure he has a good attack, but in a gym battle, or even in training, I prefer to use Pokémon that will take out the most enemies possible.

Nothing strange about that.
