the difference between base attack, defense and CP?

okay so i have noticed that there are base stats for attack and defense. If CP is a pokemon's power, then what are these stats for, what do they mean, and do they have an actual impact on pokemon battles? an example of this would be from http://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/pokemon/143 where these stats are present

The attack and defense stats in this game are not directly represented, but have an aggregate representative, the CP value (which also slightly aggregates stamina/HP, though that is directly represented). It'd be sort of like not knowing what your pokemon's stats were in the main games, but having people at Smogon who did know your pokemon's stats leaving your pokemon with a rating. (In fact, the aggregate number is like most "ratings" you'll encounter: if you were rating a restaurant on Google, you could give the place a 4/5 for the service and a 3/5 for food in a review, or you could forego these things, and, weighing the two however you choose, give the place an aggregate 3.2/5 stars.)

Basically, if attack represents the damage "base" of dps, then CP represents a third thing where damage is a factor. Since CP weighs defense and HP, it could be said that CP usually fairly represents total damage itself, as the "longevity" that greater defense and HP represent translates into more seconds in battle. CP might not always be representative though, as you could do a relatively high dps for a very short amount of time, or a terribly low dps for an exaggerated period of time.
