Bubblestrat calculator

So I get the general concept behind the bubblestrat, and though I'm having a terrible time finding actual bubble users at low CP, I'm playing around with some other candidates.

I have a level 1 Pidgeotto, CP 13 and HP 12; IV sub-50%, best stat Attack. I obviously won't get 1000 prestige fighting this, but might be a good starting point. Two questions for experienced bubblestrat players:

1) When I use the calculator, two tables are generated. The first seems to be listing every possible IV combination for the defender, and the second possible profitable (500+ prestige) attackers. Makes sense, except that the first table for this mon lists "Defender's HP" as 24 for every combination, instead of the 12 that mine has. How do I interpret this?

2) Is there any way to tell if there's a better "sweet spot" for a mon like this if I take it to level 1.5 or 2?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Bubblestrat defenders really need 10 HP. Some matchups you can get away with 11 but 12 is almost impossible, or at best, really inefficient with matchups that will actually work (600 prestige tops) because gym defenders have double their HP.

Also what move does your Pidgeotto have, Steel Wing should be slow enough but Wing Attack definitely isn't.

You can use the CP calculator on this site to figure out your Pokemon's CP and HP if you power it up. As long as it's HP stays 10 it should be fine. If it doesn't, check other stamina IV values to see if that would make a difference. If your Pokemon's IVs are uncertain then you could take a gamble, power it up and risk making the matchup unwinnable, but if it does end up being better you get more XP and prestige gain.

"gym defenders have double their HP"

Aha! First question answered, that makes perfect sense.

Pidgeotto has Steel Wing, yes. Calculator tells me I should be able to get 650 with a good level 1 Staryu. Best I can do for now... I've been saving all level 1s for a solid month and have gotten very few good candidates.

"If your Pokemon's IVs are uncertain..."

Won't the IVs for a level 1 almost always be uncertain? Unless you have exactly the right combination to figure out via appraisal, it seems like the range of possibilities will always be very wide, which is why I've had a bit of trouble using the calculator effectively. It's immaterial for this Pidgeotto, though... I see that any IV combo will push its level 1.5 HP up to an unworkable 17.

Really appreciate the response!

Back in the day when Pokevision was up you could figure out your Pokemon's exact IVs by using a proxy, but that's pretty much irrelevant, you're right in that as of now, appraisal is the closest you can get.

The problem with the Staryu is that it requires 14 attack IV. Level 1 Pokemon are rare enough. Assuming you do find a level 1 Staryu, you've now got a 1 in 8 chance of it having the IV requirements - 14 or 15 attack, and IVs range from 0-15, so 2 possibilities out of 16.

The Bubblestrat calculator also assumes the lowest IVs for the other stats (defence and stamina are irrelevant) - that 650 prestige gain is only if the Staryu has 10 CP, it could have 11 or 12 if it's other IVs are high enough, further reducing your prestige gain.

3 other options that have 0 attack IV requirement are Magnemite, Abra and Diglett, and that's why they're often the best Bubblestrat attackers, they will work in many matchups and don't have strict IV requirements. Plus their low stamina becomes an advantage in keeping their CP a few points lower.

You can use the Silph Road nest atlas to see if there's a nest of any of these near you, as well as to find optimal defenders which are usually Horsea, Poliwag and Krabby, especially Krabby, which got a CP boost because it's attack and defence was increased but it's stamina was unchanged, so it's easier to get a high CP Krabby that also has only 10 HP.

If you're not near any water, what are your usual Pokemon types not including Pidgey / Weedle / Rattata? Oddish with Razor Leaf can still work as a defender.

if you find a pikachu with thunder shock, i think is more of a guaranteed matchup since it does stab+ SE against pidgeotto. theyre common as pidgeys now, so you shouldnt struggle.

My experience:
- Horsea is the best bubble defender
- Krabby is the second as level 1/1,5 Krabby is ~17/18CP. When I powered up 1, its CP is 35/37 and not suitable anymore.
- Gastly and Duduo are good options. It will cost you 1 potion per fight.
- Magnemite and Voltorb with Spark are the best attackers, suitable for all defenders
- Bellsprout with VineWhip are good for real bubble defenders.

I have never used the bubbletrat calculator, just put them in gyms and test
