Best Time to Purchase Item Boxes

I have finally saved up enough coins to buy an Ultra Box and was wondering when the best time to buy these item boxes are. I am not a super frequent player (or pay to play) and don't usually have enough $$$ to afford one but I enjoy the walking aspect of the game, so having a bunch of incubators seems great.

Is there any incentive to wait to buy one? Is there an optimal time to buy these? I see there is a page on this site rating the boxes from all different time periods.

Thank you

The best time to buy a box is when the box is the best one ever offered and you really want all the items included. The problem is that the current box will rarely be the best one ever offered.

You can refer to the box rating page to evaluate the current box and consider how good of a discount it's offering (the current one is pretty good) and then decide how much you value the items it contains.

Much depends on which items you want. The current Valentines Hyperbox has a 10:10:10 split for the three core items raid passes, incubators and starpieces. This seems to be slightly on the low side compared to recent boxes, but not horribly so. For me, though, the fourth item is the dealbreaker: I am swimming in unused modules, so I will not buy this one. The previous box, Lunar New Year, had Lucky Eggs, which I needed even less. I will wait for a box with either incense or an extremely good deal on core items.

You may be waiting a while for the ideal box. It may frankly never happen.

I generally do an assessment on the contents each time they appear. If it's good value for the items I actually need/want, then I'll probably purchase it. In the case of the current Ultra box, Incubators and Raid Passes are the primary things of interest and for those alone it's a decent purchase, the Star Pieces being welcome as well.

It depends in your needs.. if you like incubators and enjoy walking and hatching, 10 super incubators is great!! This box is going to be until the end of the event, and its pretty good.. if you have the coins already i suggest to buy an ultra box, youdont know whats going next and the risk of loosing the opportunity is high.. in the end is just a game, dont think it too much

As far as waiting from the start of an event to the end of the event, it doesn't matter. They don't do end of event discounts or anything like that so if the current box strikes your fancy you may as well pick it up when you first can.

If you're wanting to wait and see what the next deal will be, that's always a gamble. There's no guarantee the next box will be better than the current one and depending on what exactly you're looking for it could stand to be significantly worse. I picked up the Lunar box just before the event ended and after seeing the Valentine's box am unsure if waiting would have been better. The Lunar box had a couple extra raid passes, but the Valentine's one has a couple extra star pieces as well as lure modules instead of lucky eggs. Lucky eggs mean nothing to me as a L40 and I would have made better use out of the extra star pieces and lures but I like having extra raid passes.

Ultimately whether or not you should pick up the current box comes down to if it meets your playstyle's needs in a satisfactory manner.

My starting point for evaluation is that the combined number of incubators plus the number of raid passes needs to be greater than 20. This frequently happens, so if a box doesn't hit this requirement, I don't look much further.

The remaining items will depend on your playstyle.

I'm level 40, so lucky eggs are meaningless. I stopped caring about them around level 35 because I didn't have enough stardust or the desire to max to my level many pokemon anyway.

I live where there are a lot of natural spawns, so I always forget to use incense.

I like lures for groups of people, but weather recently has been too cold for late night lure parties.

I am already buried in star pieces from a few of the previous boxes that I bought several of for a lot of incubators. If you do not have star pieces though, they are good to have for community days when you know you will be out catching a lot of pokemon for an extended period. I also like to use one for my 7th day catch streak, then catch the research rewards that I have stacked the previous week.
