Best Chansey defensive charged move set

I was wondering which one do you think is the best.
Hyper Beam, which goes with STAB, but easy to be dodged and relatively low power per energy.
Psychic, fastest charged move (typically least likely to be dodged), but lowest power per energy.
Psybeam, the option that is not included in rating. High power per energy (but might be too high to be fully take advantage of, i.e. end up in energy waste), more likely to be dodged than Psychic, but less likely to be dodged than Hyper Beam. Plus that Pysic counters Fighter & Gengar, and did 1x dmg towards Rock
Which one will you guys prefer?

In general I would guess Psychic is better than Hyper Beam on defense. It's a beastly defensive move and really strong at damaging attackers.

Except Chansey is an exception.

With such low attack stats, Chansey isn't going to threaten anyone. The only threat Chansey brings is that you run out of time. So what's the counter to that? Don't dodge and just spam your attacks as well as possible. In which case you want Chansey to use Hyper Beam. Either they're going to waste time dodging it (which adds in to your strategy) or they'll take the hit which deals the most damage.

That's a good point.
Then the other question is, assuming attackers don't dodge at all, which move sets offer highest DPS?
Typically for defenders, you would prefer higher power per energy moves instead of higher DPS moves.
However, that's under the assumption that the energy you gained (mostly by taking dmg as a defender) doesn't overflow too much.
To Chansey before the update, obviously HB is preferred due to her low defense stat that she always took a lot dmg and gained tons of energy.
However, her defense stat is pretty good after the update, in that case the energy overflow won't be that much anymore. Does Psybeam actually does more dmg than Hyper beam in the long run?

Psybeam doesn't do more damage because it takes too damn long to use 4 Psybeams when a Chansey could use Hyper Beam once and also throw in some Pounds.

Also because Chansey's attack is so low she gets more benefit from the Floor+1 function, so having Hyper Beam take less time than 4 Psybeams allows her to use Pound more often.

Not that the damage even matters on a chansey. Doing no dodging against 1250 chansey was no real threat. Just a long task.

Even if it doesn't it's still factually incorrect to say Hyper Beam isn't the best defending moveset.

Agreed, although it should be known to pick stam/def stats over moveset for this particular Pokemon. That said, I solely picked hyper to hopefully waste time for habitual dodging of the move.

Dazzling and psybeam have good chance to do more dmg than hyper beam.

You can only fire hyper beam every 100 energy.
So chansey will fire up more psybeams and dazzling between hyper beams and do more dmg.

You cant fire 2 hyper beams with 125, 150 or 175 energy.
You need 100, 200 or 300.

Pretty sure Dazzling Gleam is better than Psybeam. 155 damage per 100 energy compared to 160, but over 3 attacks instead of 4 which takes less time, so ends up doing more overall DPS.

And Dazzling Gleam isn't even a good move.

FYI Hyper Beam does 150 damage due to STAB. That's only 10 less damage than 4 Psybeams but it takes much less time to use, which gives Chansey extra time to also use quick moves, so you'll end up doing more damage.

Looking only at total damage per 100 energy isn't the right way to go when determining defending movesets.

I don't think people are going to use Shadow Claw Gengar against a Chansey, because normal types have resistance to ghost type moves, which cancels out the STAB Gengar gets on Shadow Claw (0.8 x 1.25 = 1), whereas if you use a Pokemon that has STAB and neutral typing, they end up doing 1.25x damage.

Psychic does extra damage vs Fighting but Fighting pokemon aren't that great and the super effective multiplier is the same as the STAB multplier, 1.25x, so Hyper Beam is still ahead of Psychic even against fighting types.

Use Chanseys as defenders are wastes, they just hold the battle longer, and all 5 attacks are weak to steel, easy to defeat, but battles will be taken longer.

If you want to use them, I prefer the one with dazzling gleam, which is strong to fighting-type Pokémon.

I doubt many people will use Steel-Types to attack Chansey though.

In dmg output order.

  1. Hyper beam (superior), but is easiest to dodge.
  2. Dazzling gleam (easier to dodge than psybeam)
  3. Psybeam bit worst than dazzling, bit harder to dodge.
  4. Psychic, worst dmg but hardest to dodge.

But i would still go for dazzling or psybeam.
Chansey will get more chances to use them between 1st and 2nd hyper beam.
