Overview

Mega Tyranitar has long been anticipated as the Mega Boost gives this monster of a Pokemon a tremendous boost in sheer power, and the recent addition of Brutal Swing to its moveset makes it arguably the best counter to Psychic and Ghost Types, even surpassing the cackling monster that is Mega Gengar. Pretty much every player interested in raiding is going to want to farm the Mega Energy to raise at least one member of their Tyranitar armies, but remember that you're going to need two of this monster! Since Smack Down is an Elite Move for Tyranitar, you're going to need to gather enough Mega Energy to raise one to act as a Dark attacker, and one to act as a Rock attacker, so you're going to need to either raid a number of Tyranitar to get the necessary Mega Energy or raise one and walk it for a good long time. Fortunately, Mega Tyranitar isn't a particularly hard fight given the right counters, so just farming down the energy is a very doable goal if you've got just one friend willing to join in.

Approach

Team composition

  • Mega Tyranitar's double-weakness to Fighting can make it a pretty easy duo given the right team.
  • Front-load your glass cannons for maximum damage output
  • Mega Evolution are greatly appreciated for their boosts and high power in Mega Blaziken's case
  • Mega Tyranitar has 50% odds of packing a 3-bar Dark Type move, so resistances to Dark can be key.... fortunately, just about everything on this list has that covered.

Battling strategy

  • A lot of Mega Tyranitar's moves can be threatening in one way or another; be it Crunch and Brutal Swing coming out very frequently, or Stone Edge's early damage window making it hard to dodge.
    • Ironically, Crunch is actually more threatening than Brutal Swing here due to having a slightly higher damage output, though in practice they're going to be virtually identical.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite the fact that it's forced to rely on the terribly mediocre Focus Blast, Mega Blaziken stands head-and-shoulders above the competition in this raid. It has an outstanding mix of DPS and TDO that allows it to drop huge damage onto Mega Tyranitar with ease. And while it may not work as well against Stone Edge as some other Fighting Types, it has the advantage of resisting Iron Tail and Fire Blast in conjunction with the standard Dark Type movesets for added longevity.

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Lopunny Mega Lopunny
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While not as strong as Mega Blaziken, Mega Lopunny makes a good budget Mega Evolution. It has high average performance that makes it viable, though it definitely lives in the face of the self-frying chicken highlighted above.

Mega Alakazam Mega Alakazam
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Well, it's worth a mention at least.

Mega Alakazam sports a huge attack stat and a solid Fighting Type moveset, meaning it can come in and beat up poor Mega Tyranitar... but it's a risky move with little payoff. Mega Alakazam is weak to what are arguably Mega Tyranitar's most dangerous moves and may end up dropping before it can launch a Focus Blast, meaning it has the potential to be the worst counter on this list. It also doesn't boost Fighting Types on the field like the above entries, so it's at a huge disadvantage that offers nothing more than the potential silver metal of Mega Evolution DPS in this raid... if everything goes right.

Supreme Counters

Terrakion Terrakion
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The true Fighting Type legend is here.

With huge DPS that's compounded by resistances to Dark Type movesets and Fire Blast, Terrakion stands as a paragon among the counters to Mega Tyranitar, standing as a beacon of light against this destructive kaiju's darkness.

....I mean, it is weak to Iron Tail, but we're not about to mention that and spoil the mood that this Legendary Sword of Justice exudes.

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While often overlooked in favor of big-brother Terrakion, Keldeo sports similar average performance with the added benefit of resisting Iron Tail, making its resistance set in this raid perfectly covered. While it's true that it doesn't quite pack as much of a punch as Terrakion, it's still very much using if you raised yours.

Shadow Machamp Shadow Machamp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Wherever there exists a being that needs to be punched, Machamp will find it and punch it.

Shadow Machamp is the true-vanilla Fighting Type, and a strong option for this raid regardless of moveset or situation. If you want to break through Mega Tyranitar, then Shadow Machamp can definitely help arrange it!

Shadow Hariyama Shadow Hariyama
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

In a parallel similar to Terrakion Vs. Keldeo, Shadow Hariyama lives in the shadow of Shadow Machamp, but it's a perfectly good counter in-and-of itself!

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The first non-Shadow/non-Legend/non-Mega on this list, Lucario wears its broken charged move and Steel sub-typing with pride. One of the gold-standards of the type, Lucario will take on most movesets with ease, even going so far as to resist Iron Tail and double resist Stone Edge, making it a great universal counter option into Mega Tyranitar... just make sure that you dodge Fire Blast.

Conkeldurr Conkeldurr
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While it never got the chance to wear the Fighting Type Champion belt, Conkeldurr is still a power-house Pokemon that can cause a lot of pain.

Good Counters

The old classic rises again. While not what it once was in the raid scene, Machamp is still a very capable attacker that should not be overlooked. If you have a team of 6 from the old days, they can still pull off a duo for this raid.

Hariyama Hariyama
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Hariyama is still here, and Hariyama is still willing to slap Mega Tyranitar silly with those big hands.

On Christmas day, 2018, I caught a 98% Hariyama while out with my family that I named "Slamta Clause". This has no baring on this raid or Hariyama's overall performance, I just wanted to share.

Galarian-Zapdos Galarian Zapdos

Galarian Zapdos is actually a decent counter for this ra- ...what? You don't have one? Noone actually has one and everyone who claims to have caught one is lying? Oh, never mind then....

Virizion Virizion

It looks so wrong to have Virizion listed as a good counter to a raid, but here we are! Sacred Sword and Double Kick really are just that good.

Did anyone else have someone in their old-school raid group who insisted that Breloom was better than Machamp as a Fighting Type? No? Just me? Okay then....

Pheromosa Pheromosa
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

For the love of all things Holy, dodge everything if you're bringing this bug along for the ride! Seriously; if Pheromosa doesn't reach Focus Blast at least once, then it's basically a dead raider slot.

You know, performing what equates to a bodyslam against something that's clad in craggy, rocky armor has got to hurt like heck... but it's doubtlessly effective here.
