PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Poison Jab should be paired with Gunk Shot. This set is better against neutral targets. Plus, Gunk Shot has the added bonus of throwing a garbage can.

  • Bite should be paired with Dark Pulse. This set is better against targets weak to Dark.

  • Snarl is just ever so slightly slightly weaker than Bite, and harder to dodge with too. Stick with Bite if you use Alolan Muk as a Dark type attacker

  • Sludge Wave is strictly inferior to Gunk Shot, having worse power and no garbage can.

  • Acid Spray is a terrible move in raids and also has no garbage can.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Snarl is the preferred fast move on defense, having higher damage and energy gains, while also hitting Metagross pretty hard.

  • Poison Jab is slightly weaker than Snarl and is double-resisted by Metagross, but has the advantage of off-typing with Dark Pulse and isn’t resisted by Machamp.

  • Bite is strictly inferior to Snarl on defense.

  • Dark Pulse is the superior defensive charge move, with multiple bars.

  • Gunk Shot is strong, and it literally throws a garbage can.

  • Sludge Wave is weaker than Gunk Shot, and it has no garbage can.

  • Acid Spray is a three-bar move, but its damage is abysmal. Also; no garbage can.

PVE Overview

Alolan Muk gained a Dark typing and psychedelic colors over its prolonged separation from Kanto, but what did it gain in Pokemon GO viability? Not a whole lot. Alolan Muk is only weak to Ground, but it also no longer resists Fighting, which is why Kantonian Muk was a viable defender in the first place. The rise of non-Machamp gym attackers like Meteor Mash  Metagross has given its defensive dark sets a bit of a boost, especially with its new toy, Snarl. In general Alolan Muk is good, but nothing that will rock the defense meta. As an attacker, its Attack stat just isn't high enough to be viable.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Poison Jab or Snarl + Dark Pulse and Sludge Wave

Poison Jab performs slightly better than Snarl in terms of both damage output and energy generation, but they're two different typings which may have their own niches depending on the fight.

Dark Pulse is almost always preferable since it's the only non-Poison-type charge move available to Alolan Muk, with a perk of also being the most powerful Dark-type charge move in the game. Sludge Wave costs 65 energy which is a bit expensive, but due to its above average 1.69 DPE it can hit quite hard if unshielded.

Poison Jab or Snarl + Dark Pulse and Acid Spray

Acid Spray if used correctly can be rewarding if you're looking to have fun with our colorful gooey friend. It's important to note that Acid Spray's debuff is guaranteed, which makes it more optimal if it's successfully used as shield bait since it would otherwise deal pathetic damage. Keep in mind that the opponent is less likely to shield if Alolan Muk doesn't threaten their Pokemon with any of its other moves, in which case dealing raw damage from another charge move might be better. It's also possible in certain matchups to get ahead or come back from an unfavorable situation if Alolan Muk can endure the fights long enough to debuff the Pokemon that the player would otherwise lose to.

What about Gunk Shot?

Gunk Shot has almost identical DPE (Damage Per Energy) as Sludge Wave, but costs 10 more energy to use. While this would typically make it less favorable since Alolan Muk might faint before obtaining enough energy, its higher damage allows it to be preferable in very niche fights, such as the Alolan Muk (one shield) mirror. If anything, pick Gunk Shot for that hilarious trash can animation.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 3.5 / 5

Alolan Muk is a very well-rounded Pokemon, with a synergistic Dark/Poison typing that covers their weaknesses to Psychic and Fighting, and leaves Alolan Muk with only a single vulnerability to only Ground-type attacks. A relatively good moveset allows it to get wins against various Pokemon, including top picks such as Azumaril, Cresselia, Lugia, and Deoxys Defense Forme. Alolan Muk also can utilize debuff strategies with Acid Spray which could turn losses into wins in some situations. Just keep in mind that it's not possible to obtain an Alolan Muk under 1500 CP if you evolve a hatched Alolan Grimer, since even the minimum IVs (10/10/10) would be too high, which limits its accessibility to trading.

Ultra League: 4.5 / 5

Alolan Muk gets to flex its gooey muscles more in Ultra League, thanks to lesser restrictions on its maximum CP of 2757. An increase in its ranking is partly due to a higher win ratio in Ultra League, as well as its wins against top picks like Giratina Altered Forme, and Cresselia. Being able to tie or win against Giratina Origin Forme and Lugia depending on movesets is also very notable and helps cement our colorful buddy as a competitor in this league.

Master League: 2.5 / 5

Master League is rampant with high CP Pokemon that's largely legendary Pokemon, which leaves Alolan Muk somewhat behind. Being able to heavily pressure Giratina Origin Forme with Snarl is something, but not having clean wins is unappealing compared to other options.
