Rating Explanation:

Tyranitar has a base stat total and pervasive STAB coverage comparable to Dragonite; however, where Dragonite has many resistances, Tyranitar has many weaknesses. This doesn’t hold Tyranitar back from being a top attacker or defender. Having a high base stat total goes a long way in this game, beyond just sitting high on a gym.

As a defender, Pokemon that don’t resist Iron Tail or Tyranitar’s STAB attacks are going to be more pressured than ever to not mess up their dodges. One mess up on dodging a special will likely spell the end for almost any attacker up against it. As an attacker, Tyranitar can handle almost any job as well as Pokemon who specialize for the role. While in many of these situations he won’t shine as brightly as a specialist or Dragonite, Tyranitar destroys Psychic and Normal-types like none other.

Attacking Movesets
Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Bite is clearly superior to Iron Tail. While they have similar DPS and energy gain, Bite has STAB, better dodge/weave-DPS, and Dark-type coverage (the 2nd best neutral coverage in the game). Iron Tail isn’t all that bad, but it’s much more suited for defense.

  • Stone Edge is on par with Crunch. A single bar charge move poses better dogability. A 3 bar charge move results in less instances of over-kill and having to hold onto your charge move. Both attacks have great DPS and type coverage.

  • Fire Blast is underwhelming in every aspect.

Defending Movesets
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Iron Tail is clearly superior to Bite. Even without STAB, it’s defense DPS and energy gain consistently outpaces Bite (even in situations where Iron Tail deals not very effective damage). Bite is pretty poor on defense and is much more suited for offense.

  • Crunch is generally superior to Stone Edge. In general, multi bar charge moves serve better on defense since they have more opportunities to land an un-dodged hit or even get used at all. That said, Stone Edge has a fast animation time and early damage window; it is by no means a poor move for defense.

  • Fire Blast is underwhelming in every aspect.
