Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Frost Breath is slightly better than Ice Shard; the latter builds energy slightly faster but is also a legacy move.

  • Water Gun is typically undesired, as Lapras’s novelty lies in its STAB Ice-type moves.

  • Hydro Pump, though powerful, is similarly frowned upon since other Water-type attackers outclass Lapras.

  • Blizzard is on par with Ice Beam, boiling down to style preference (1 bar’s one-and-done vs. 2 bar’s maneuverability)

  • Dragon Pulse is underwhelming due to lack of STAB and meaningful coverage. Luckily, it’s a legacy move.
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Ice Shard and Frost Breath perform similarly, with the former having a slight energy gain advantage.

  • Water Gun is typically inferior, suffering from rock-bottom base power.

  • Hydro Pump slightly superior to Blizzard; both are very high-power single charge moves; the former has a much earlier damage window and deals with Fire and Rock-type counters, the latter takes care of Grass-types.

  • Ice Beam is generally favored over Blizzard by virtue of being a 2 bar charge move.

  • Dragon Pulse is underwhelming due lack of STAB and late damage window, in addition to being a legacy move.

Rating Explanation:

Lapras stands alongside Cloyster as Pokemon GO’s premier Ice-type attackers. Though its Atk and Def don’t seem very impressive, Lapras’s HP is the 6th highest in the game. Combined with strong quick moves like Ice Shard, this leads to rapid and brutal Blizzard charges throughout a gym fight or raid. In addition, Water / Ice dual typing serves to threaten both Grass and Fire-type counters, leaving few “correct” answers when attacking a Lapras.

Sadly, the times haven’t been kind to Lapras. With Dragonite’s fall from grace, Lapras is hard-pressed to find a new place in the meta. As a bulky Ice-type attacker, it is also outclassed by Articuno. Furthermore, Ice is not a particularly useful type against currently available raid bosses, meaning that Lapras is relegated to a tank attacker role in Lugia raids. Ironically, its biggest defensive strength is an offensive liability, as Water / Ice typing hurts Lapras’s effectiveness in Zapdos and Venusaur raids.

All things considered, Lapras is still a powerful defensive option, backing up impressive bulk with an ability to damage its “counters” for super effective damage in many cases.

Raid Boss Counters
SupremeOverall best counter always. Almost always top in DPS and very high in survivability. The Pokemon you want for the job.
GoodThe next best if you don’t have Supreme Pokemon.
TankWhen you’re down to your 5-6th Pokemon and need to hold the line and not suck while doing it. Tanks always have more survivability than Supreme, but less DPS than Good.
GlassMore DPS than Good with significantly less survivability. Note: Less DPS than Supreme.
