Rating Explanation:

Rhydon is a perfect example of how having a high base stat total (BST) and high base power quick moves can overcome poor defensive typing and even lack of STAB. Its Ground/Rock typing leaves Rhydon doubly vulnerable to Water and Grass-type attacks, while also including a weakness to Fighting and Ice-types; attack types that are included in the arsenal of some of the best and most common attackers in the game (namely Vaporeon, Exeggutor, Lapras, and Machamp). While for other Pokemon (namely Golem) this would be a recipe for disaster, Rhydon’s BST evens the odds.

As an attacker, Rhydon is like a tank; slow but sturdy. In many situations, Rhydon’s bulk doesn’t compensate for its slower quick moves but it can allow for less careful dodging practices. That all said, you will want to keep Rhydon in situations where it has a distinct advantage such as against Electric or Fire-types. More meta-relevant match ups Rhydon does get noticed for are against Snorlax and Blissey, resisting their STAB Normal-type attacks and having the choice to use either Mud Slap or Rock Smash to retaliate with.

Attacking Movesets
Offensive Moves Explanation
  • Mud Slap is generally superior to Rock Smash due to gaining STAB. However, if you’re using Rhydon to fight against Pokemon that take neutral damage from Ground and super effective damage from fighting (namely Snorlax and Blissey), Rock Smash ends up being on par with (if not slightly better than) Mud Slap due to it’s higher speed.

  • Stone Edge is generally superior to Earthquake, even in scenarios where Earthquake has super effective damage. Stone Edge hits faster, giving it higher DPS and allowing for less mishaps with dodging. Rock-type has better coverage than ground. This is isn’t to say Earthquake is a poor move. The difference in their performance is usually 1 to 2 seconds of battle time.

  • On offense, Megahorn is underwhelming in every aspect.
Defending Movesets
Defensive Moves Explanation
  • Mud Slap is clearly superior to Rock Smash due to gaining STAB. However, with base 15 damage, Rock Smash isn’t all that bad.

  • Stone Edge is Rhydon’s best charge move on defense. Due to it’s fast animation and early damage window, it will often hit a player dealing massive damage. This massive damage is backed by STAB and that beautiful Rock-type coverage.

  • Megahorn is arguably superior to Earthquake. While it doesn’t have STAB, its animation and damage window are similar to Stone Edge. Earthquake isn’t bad, it’s just not as good as Rhydon’s other options. It’s long animation and late damage window results in it being dodged more often than not. The difference between a charge move being significant or insignificant to defense is if it hits or not, especially for single bar charge moves.
