Overview

The Johto Festival introduced Ursaring worldwide as a tier 4 raid boss. It’s another battle in which Machamp runs wild. Does Niantic pick these out of a hat, or is there biased selection? Ursaring is almost exactly as bulky as Tyranitar against Fighting types, so Tyranitar duo squads are equipped to beat this bear. Ursaring’s much lower defense stat also renders some neutrally effective counters viable with weather boost.

In contrast to Tyranitar, Ursaring is much better at mauling its best counters. Play Rough is super effective against Fighting, while a STAB Hyper Beam is like Tyranitar’s weather boosted Fire Blast. Be prepared to spend some Max Revives.

Approach

Team composition

  • Machamp and Hariyama are the bread and butter of Ursaring counters

  • Mewtwo is the bulkiest option, but it likely won’t save you from re-entry

Dodging strategy

  • Advise caution if dodging Hyper Beam, as it often triggers dodge glitch

  • Standard teams shouldn’t need to dodge or re-enter vs. Close Combat

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.
