GamePress

What am I missing?

Sorry for an offtop, but I decided to ask it here since I only see this here... Why do people say "could/would/should OF", instead of "have"?? Like, is this some kind of a slang I have never heard before, is it a way of shortening ones message (like ppl instead of people or Btw, etc)? Or is it a flat out mistake that for some weird reason only gamepress community members make? It's been troubling me for a long time...

I think it's a mistake. I see a lot of other grammatical errors, too ;) Not just here, but everywhere online.

I surely make mistakes too, but it's "situational". The one I asked however is sort of weird since I have never ever seen anyone make it outside of this site which got me confused.

it's just ignorance, my friend. Happens to be rampant in many places.

I think it's a common mistyping that comes from the way people pronounce the conjugated "could've" and type what they hear as "could of"

Anyway, message boards are not the type of places to expect or ask for perfect grammar.

Does it make it difficult to understand the point someone is making for some reason?
If it means that you have trouble understanding the point being made because you are too busy looking at the grammar, then perhaps that is what you are missing.
There is a whole 'spectrum' of grammatical errors, but most people are more interested in the content than the grammar.
There are whole countries that think that 'colour' has no 'u' in it, for example...so this is far from the only issue.

Also, if this is the only place you see it then you need to read more online.

I know right...how dare the English do that with the English language.

First of all you need to stop acting like you're a superhero fighting against a villain who wants to take control over the world. Nowhere did I state that it causes trouble with understanding, neither that I'm interested in mistakes etc. You should definiately take a brake from the political correctness campaign, because it looks like it posioned your brain completely. I asked IF it is a mistake. I didn't criticise people who write this. I didn't play the smart one making laugh of anyone or anything like this. I just asked IF, also giving alternatives (i.e. slang). I was looking for knowledge and you got a butthurt.
TL:DR calm your tits, sir ;)

Edit: I have read online more than you and your family combined, but even if I haven't, that's non of your business to tell me I SHOULD do it, lol. Maybe that's why you're so sensitive, try talking IRL instead of reading online ;)

You put something in a public forum...I responded.
This is about pokemon and you went grammar teacher...what did you expect?

Now...who is butthurt here really?
I would call this irony, but it just plain boring contradictory - at least irony would be interesting.

All these kids with keyboards wondering if I would say the same IRL - well, I would and do. What you see is what you get.
I wonder if you would fire up so much if we were actually face to face...so I guess that part goes both ways. I doubt you would start personal attacks against me AND MY FAMILY (too far) without the anonoimity of the internet.
Yes...you started making this personal and attacking me and my character AND EVEN MY FAMILY - who do you think really needs to pull their head in?

No need to get worked up...while you claim I am the sensitive one.
In case you can't see past the angry fog, I was having a laugh and joke with people - and I was not the only one doing so...but please feel free target me specifically, while telling me the flaws in MY character.

I especially like the part where you got worked up, and then told me I am being too sensitive - that part was especially fun.

As for knowledge...we gave you plenty. I pointed out other words that are used differently, and spelled differently depending on location...and yet they are still considered 'accurate'.
If you took away the emotion you may have seen that side of it, and that it was delivered with humour with those responding.
Seriously....who is the butthurt one here.

Please don't target only my comments when there is many on here who also had something to say about your point - and don't make it personal, that is uneccessary and just plain bad form.

NB If it was political correctness, wouldn't I be working on everyone elses grammar?
And for the record, if we were in person, and if you felt it appropriate to personally attack my family for no reason other than personal butthurt, my reaction would be far far far from politically correct - I think you have read me wrong.

EDIT In answer to your question...what am I missing?
You are clearly missing the many times I contribute positve answers to genuine Q&A posts, that offer people another perspective, or directly answers their question. For you to say that all I do is act like your superhero is massively flawed, and ignores the majority of my posts.
Even these posts had working examples that showed differences in grammar the world over, in a humorous way, but you were too busy prejudging to see what was actually being said.

I was not commenting on your activity on the whole forum, but only about this post... And I don't really know where did u put the irony there, you were basicly claiming I am grammar-nazi not seeing the point and being a formalist. Where's the irony in that? Also, the only part where I said anything about your family was "I read more online than you and your faimily combined". If you think that's an insult, or attack... We really have nothing to talk about xD Seriously, totally made my day by this. I attacked your family, good one... ;D

Btw. about taking it personal - you just wrote a whole essay. Super serious, full of lament, accusations, suggesting I'm a kid, and full of the "I wonder if you would do it face to face" quasi bully, wannabe terrifying Bruce Willis style crap. All of this as a response to a mildly sarcastic post where I was trying to "defend" from your first attempt to criticise and mock me. And I am taking this personal? Please... ;D

I've never heard anyone write "offtop" before but typically I wouldn't complain cuz its sorta dickish.

They didn't pay much attention in English class is my guess. Or English might be a second language for them and they just don't know the difference.Try learning another language and you will be more sympathetic and might learn more about your own language.

How about learning German then?

Especially for those of you debating whether colour or color is correct :D

In Germany, the BE variant is favoured btw ;)
And hell yeah I hate commas in English :D Is that one after Germany correct? :D

I can talk for myself, as a no native English speaker (it is my 3rd language and I barely use it speaking or writing, more about reading and listening on movies and books)

I normally make a lot of mistakes, but I don't think we should be judged for that, I don't judge people from other countries when they are in Spain and don't pronounce letters like "r" correctly or they make incomplete sentences, if it is a very big mistake I just tell them a better way to get to the same point, but the point of language is to understand each other, to communicate and share something, if you understand the point a person is trying to share does it really matters if the use of their language is perfect?

Respect...3 languages is impressive.
And your English is better than many that have English as their only language.

Actually, maybe the one asking the question isn't a native speaker, too. Since he asked IF, he maybe just wanted to know, enabling him to learn ;)

Btw hearing other not natives saying things like "I become a signature here" is just hilariously funny :D (German native speaker here)

You learn by making mistakes ;) so feel free to correct me. I know my English isn't perfect but I'd like to improve my "comma skills" for example :D

Do you mean you don't use commas in German writings? I know you have words that need 2 phrases to translate (I'm exaggerating, of course :) ), but once in a while a comma helps :).
P.S. It is said that Romanian grammar is harder than German one, we have more situations that are exception to a given rule than the ones respecting the same rule (exaggerating a bit again, but not that much).

Of course, I use commas in German writings :)
But I'm having a hard time positioning them correctly in English (in German here would be a comma) since it is different and I do not remember all those rules...
Especially this one is really strange for me:
Blue, yellow, red, and green. That comma before "and" is just wtf :D

I cannot say for certain whether Romanian grammar is harder. Sadly I learnt Latin in school (and not Spanish which wasn't an option). But I'd choose Latin other French again :D

you don't have to use comma in that situation :): http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/30516/should-i-use-a-comma-before-and-or-or
I think someone is messing with you by telling you to add commas before an "and" that is part of an enumeration.
