Steel Wing + Solar Beam Ho-oh vs Regirock

Just curious as it doesn't seem to be discussed anywhere yet.

Both Steel and Grass will be super effective against Regirock. Will that make a Ho-oh with this moveset finally useful?

Of course the downside is that Ho-oh is double weak to rock attacks, so perhaps it will only be strong against Regirocks that have double-fighting movesets?

I only just started playing again and so the only legendary I have caught is Ho-oh (and level 15 Zapdos from the missions...). Was kind of disappointed to see that so far, it isn't a great pokemon anyways...

Yes, if they gave Ho-Oh reasonable moves, it would have broken the meta, so they gave it total trash moves, like Brave Bird (full bar for 90 flying damage, it makes Close Combat look strong - but at least Brave Bird is fast). The only moves with STAB are Fire Blast (not as good as Overheat) and the aforementioned Brave Bird.

I was hoping that for Ho-Oh's second visit it would get a power bump, like Lugia did with Sky Attack getting buffed to 80 power. Heck, give the old Sky Attack to Ho-Oh and that would be an improvement. Oh well.

After Lati@s and Ho-Oh, we get the Regi trio, all defensive monsters that can't go into a gym, so fairly useless, and then hopefully some good stuff from Gen4. Dialga, Palkia, Arceus should all be strong (but Arceus might be a special research task or EX raid [uggh] encounter.)

In no way would it have broken the meta to give Ho-Oh reasonable moves. We're not talking about Mewtwo here, with a 300 base attack stat. Groudon and Kyogre got reasonable moves, and they are almost as tanky as Ho-Oh, with much higher attack stats. There are any number of decent STAB movesets they could have given Ho-oh that would have made him usable without breaking the meta.

As he stands now, Ho-oh is perhaps second only to Suicune as the most useless legendary.

Comparing level 40 counters, Ho-Oh ranks at #14 for DPS and #12 for TDO against Regirock. Not great, but works if you lack other options.

Notably, Hariyama is strictly superior to Ho-Oh, sporting better DPS and TDO while being non-legendary. And of course Machamp is the best non-legendary DPS. I'd recommend you to just get your fighting team in order, they will carry you through all the Regis without needing to worry about any legendaries to counter them.

Thanks for the info. Kind of sucks to hear since I wanted to power up a legendary - and as you noted it's likely for the next while there won't be any worth powering. I personally hope they'll cycle back through all the previous legendaries after introducing the regi's (although I know everyone that didn't quit for a year wants new stuff). Also sucks to have missed the dratini/mareep community days - makes me feel really weak :(

I have a solid lineup of Machamps and Hariyama from the fighting pokemon week. I evolved 3 machamp and 6 hariyama, although only one of each got double fighting movesets (my first 5 Hariyama all got bullet punch :| ).

Is it a good use of fast TM to reroll a Hariyama from bullet punch to counter if it has Dynamic Punch?

Or should I hold on to TMs for legendaries?

What about using a charged TM to reroll Machamp from Heavy Slam if he has Counter? If it lands on Close Combat is it still a worthwhile improvement?

I also have the candies to evolve one more Machamp and two more Hariyama in my next session, so I'll probably wait to see what moves those get before using any TMs.

YES, do it, DON'T hesitate.

> Or should I hold on to TMs for legendaries?

NO, use them on what is worthy of them... stuff you'll use with the new move, but not the old... e.g. that Hariyama

> What about using a charged TM to reroll Machamp from Heavy Slam if he has Counter? If it lands on Close Combat is it still a worthwhile improvement?

Close combat is a lot better than heavy slam - as above, if it means you use him, he'll be worth it.

I'd probably say use the candies to power ones you have upto break points against relevant Regis.

That regirock better have fighting moves as ho-oh is double weak to rock

It's a very bad idea.
Ho-oh is number 19 if regirock moveset is RockSmash/FocusBlast.
Against Zap Cannon or Stone Edge it is unviable.
