Soloing T3s really a challenge or a test of skill?

No, it's about the following things:
* How many stardust are you willing to whale
* How many rare candies are you willing to whale
* Pray that you don't run into one of those nasty unfixed after 1 year bugs (Timer ends in 5 seconds, Boss kills you at the same time you land a charge move and it's nulled)
* How are you able to resist dodging (That only applies to stuff like Jolteon and Claydol, against Machamp, Alakazam and Gengar you must dodge charged moves)
* The basic knowledge of pokemon weaknesses and of course as many high level Groudons, Kyogres, Mewtwos, Tyranitars, Lugias, Raikous and whatever high level counters you have

So i personally don't think it's a test of skill but more like a test of status. A challenge is not related to your status but your skill but status has higher priority than skill in soloing T3s. Therefore, soloing a T3 is not a challenge not a skill test but more like a show of status.

Also, If i see a Jolteon now i'm running away as far as i can because nobody will go in and fight it.

A test of your climate, too. I have 8 level 25 Groudons, but just 1 at level 30. I guess I could beat Jolteon with a clear boost.

Clearly, any level 40 player is going to have an easier time soloing T3's than a level 30 player. But aside from that, it is an individual challenge, and these don't exist any more in higher level raids, where you need to team up. If you don't fail a few times before succeeding at a T3 solo, clearly it was not much of a challenge. But if it takes you several tries, it is an individual challenge no matter the level and skill of the player.

If someone solos a T3 and doesn't tell anyone else about it, did it really happen?

So I have been playing Go since 3 days after it came out. I only play casually and in my spare time. I have never done a legendary raid. Been around at least 3 of every legendary when they hatched but others never appeared. I just hit lvl 37 and I have a nice team of good mons. I enjoy soloing against mons I have a legit shot against. For me, Machamp, Gengar, Aerodyctyl, Alakazam, Omastar were fun and challeging because they really helped teach me to dodge better. But like Mr said, Jolteon is really only beatable with multiple high lvl Groudon. For me, it is a waste. I get that some players will enjoy and do it, but it doesn't do anything for me. I also want to add I am not a free player. I spend cash on stardust, candy, and egg events. I get the frustration of some with the return of Jolteon.

Yes, high level dragonite. I think that high level alakazam and Espeon can at least keep you on time.

I think of it more as giving my powered up Pokemon a purpose and to get some decent rewards out of it.

I will say though, months ago Gengar was my first Tier 3 solo and I did it with sub lvl 30 Pokemon, no weather boost, lots of dodging, and no instant Charge move button. It felt like skill at the time.

You don't need to dodge charged moves against Machamp..

Throw in 6 level 30 Alakazams and see if you can survive a weather boosted Counter/DP one without dodging.

1. What else should we use our stardust on? Spending resources on your characters so you can clear ingame content without help seems like quite the logical thing to do in a game.

2. Rare candy is not required. Weatherboosts make all tier 3 bosses soloable without legendaries and without weatherboost Jolteon is the only one that hasn't been soloed without a single legendary (albeit the no-legendary Claydol used 3 legacy Gengars which is way more out of reach for most people than a ton of rare candy).

3. There is no bug involved with you and the boss doing charge moves simultaneously. If your move hit before your mon died, then the damage is dealt. If your mon dies before the move connects, then there is no damage. The timer is annoying, but all it means is that we need to plan solos with a time to win of 165-170 required instead of 180.

4. I'm not sure what you mean by "resisting dodging". Some Claydol solo setups require dodging and Machamp, Alakazam and Gengar can all be soloed without dodging with the right team against the right moveset.

5. There's a lot more to it than basic knowledge of type advantage. Dual typings make the lists of viable counters fairly large for many bosses and you usually need sims to know which ones are the best. Looking at sim rankings is pretty simple though.

Having more and better pokemon can make it easy, yes, but that doesn't mean it's not a challenge to players without optimal teams. And higher level players can make it challenging again by limiting their team comp. I soloed Machamp today using Espeon, Gardevoir, Jynx, Granbull, Ursaring and Blaziken without any weatherboosted moves and my team got pretty close to dying. If the charge move had been DP or HS, it would've been a real nail-biter. Then there are things like Jolteon, Machamp and Exeggutor 1-v-1s which require perfect dodging. Is that not a challenge? (I can tell you it is after failing the Machamp 1-v-1 at least 10 times)

Ok buddy. What's the point of this post again?

I prefer wasting my daily pass on a legendary. Soloing doesn't give enough reward imo.

What does the term "whale" mean? I've seen it before, but can't figure it out.

A gullible person that spends her/her way to 1000+ rare candy, runs 9 incubators at all times, syncs star pieces to all those hatches. Thus maxing 1 or more Groudons to beat Jolteon. Whatever it took to solo Claydol is another example.

Other people wait for the weather to be favorable though, then it becomes a reasonable challenge to defeat Jolteon.

You need 248 candy to max a pokemon from level 20. If you spend all daily passes during a month on legendary raids and catch say 70%, of which 10% with pinap, you would gain 18(pinaps)+54(regular)+15(transfer all but 6)=87 candy. The month of raiding should reward you with somewhere between 100 to 150 rare candy on top of that depending on luck. It's completely reasonable for a f2p player to max a legendary every two months, and even then you don't actually need those legendaries at max because of breakpoints which saves a ton of candy. Stardust is only an issue in extremely rural areas, most city and suburban players will easily make more than 250k in a month.

Claydol was also soloable with only 1 high level legendary. Whaling not necessary.

I don't think you understand the difference between a whale and a moderate spender. Whales are those people that are already closing in or past 1000 legendary raids. They have way more than 1000 rare candy.

Also, are they gullible for spending money on something they enjoy? Not your place to criticize how someone else spends their money.

You can always make up your own challenges, such as soloing with a no-stardust team or using non-standard mons.

1) Poorly thought through complaint. Whales don't really earn more stardust than free-to-play players, even if they constantly run 9 incubators, weather-boosted normal catches are a far more efficient way to earn a lot of dust.
2) Again, poorly thought through. As other users have already said, aside from Jolteon, no soloable boss requires using a legendary. Further, for all non legends, walking a buddy or feeding at a gym is more than sufficient source of candy.
3) Bugs suck, but until (if) they are fully fixed it's all part of the challenge.
4) Whether or not to dodge is, again, part of the planning one must do for the more challenging bosses. My team of Zams and Espys can defeat a Champ of any moveset, but some dodging is usually required. My team of Ttars could beat any non-FB Zam, but only if dodging was kept to a minimum.
5) "The basic knowledge of pokemon weaknesses..." is almost always not enough on it's own to defeat any boss that isn't of trivial difficulty.

Finally, you're clearly missing the actual reason someone would want to work towards being able to solo a (perhaps even every) T3, increasing their odds of earning the maximum rewards possible without requiring help from multiple other players, and without having to spend extra time finding a raid they can more easily handle. This practice easily allows a free-to-play player to earn enough Golden Razzes and Rare Candies to be just about as effective as the average whale who uses a dozen premium passes a day.

P.S. Yes, people who choose to brag when they manage to solo a particular T3 are mildly annoying, but they are quite easily ignored without needing to whine about them. And Jolteon may be painfully difficult, but in nearly all biomes the ease of finding Eevees make it it clearly the least worth your time.

This game involves some strategy. That's it.

If you wanna count dodging as a "skill", go ahead.
