Should IV rating be the deciding factor for evolving a pokemon?

Hey Everyone,

I have 3 Omanyte that are good enough to evolve but I think I know which one but I wanna make sure because I want to use this pokemon for gyms. I have a Omanyte 997 CP(Level 28) 71% IV, 938 CP(Level 27) 80% IV and 751 (Level 20) 89% IV. The Level 20 Omanyte seems like the best option, the only problem is the amount of candy it'll take to level up that pokemon but if he is the best option I don't have a choice I guess. Which Omanyte should I evolve?

Thanks for the help!

If you are wanting a defensive Omastar to place in gyms, then you should wait and hope Omastar gets new moves.

Omastar has no good defensive moveset right now. Mud Shot and Water Gun both are pretty bad on defense. Its only worthwhile moveset is Water Gun/Hydro Pump for offense against fire pokemon, but there are better alternatives with that moveset for against ground pokemon.

I agree with all of this.

If you must evolve one OP you will want to favor level more for an attacker and take IVs more into account for a defender in general. However since Omastar does not achieve a CP high enough to win any CP race in most areas I'm not sure that matters much either in this case.

Serious PG players tend to overemphasize IV.

For Omastar, you're not going to place him in a gym as a defender. (Bad defender AND low CP)

So if you want to use, it's as an attacker. So I would look at both IV and CP. CP (aka Level) is probably more important if candies are not plentiful.

89 iv is good; but it isn't worth an extra 50 candies to power up to L27 or 28 when it only cost 50 to evolve. None of them are great; but if you are itching to evolve, go with the L27/80%.

Always look to the future and know yourself. If you will quit playing in 6 months, evolve the highest lvl mons to enjoy that time. If you intend to still be playing hard for more than a year, evolve the highest IV because you will get the stardust eventually.
