I'm one Bagon capture away from being able to evolve a Salamence. I am, primarily, a dex-filler, but participate in as many legendary raids as I can. When it comes to gyms, I generally find them with open slots and throw trash in, in order to minimize the need to use revives. Thus, I lean toward having good attackers. So, how important is Salamence's defense stat? Right now, I have two candidates for evolution.

Level 20: 84% or 82%, either 14/11/13 (H/A/D) or 14/13/10

Level 26: 71%, either 14/15/3 or 13/15/4

What's the consensus? (A) Evolve the higher level with 15 attack? Or, (B) the lower level with higher IV%? Or, (C) "Have a little patience, catch some more Bagons, and wait until you get a better one."

I'd say wait till you get a 15 attack max appraisal level since these critters are rare. I got a 15 HP one as my buddy, 87% IV, but waiting for a better one to evolve.

C. Salamence isn't strictly necessary for anything, so if you want a good attacker, I'd just wait for a good Bagon.

C. Wait until you catch or hatch a better one. Or until Salamence becomes a Raid Boss. (Fingers crossed!)

If you JUST HAVE to have one right now, I'd go with the Level 26 - it's not going to be that great of a Gym Defender, particularly now with people building up teams to take out Rayquaza so they have teams who would make ridiculously short work of Salamence. Meaning Attack and higher levels are all-important - so the low Defense/High Attack and Stamina Bagon is more useful in the short term.

Still, that's an awful lot of candies to ... waste... on a Meh Salamence.

Bagon should be a level 1 boss. Seriously... who in their right mind would toss a raid pass at a Swablu? My office sits above three pokestops and I've caught a dozen this morning. I would, however, use a pass on a Bagon in hope of getting a high iv.

As for gym defense, not really a big issue for me. There are a few gyms within a short distance from my house, and none of them are high turnover gyms. I can put an 800 cp Machop in one and it'll sit there for three days. LOL.

The consensus seems to be wait, which is what I expected, and what I'll end up doing. It's just really difficult. I really WANT a Salamence. Yesterday.

C - Wait until you get a better one.

Salamance is a good pokemon, but I wouldn't class it as essential, and chances are you already have a Dragonite or two that fulfils the same basic roles. If not, then the upcoming community day is an ideal time to rectify that.

I have three DNites, two DT/O (levels 35.5 and 34.5) and one DT/DP (level 34.5). I also have a 96% DT/O Rayquaza that I'll be powering up to level 30 in a couple weeks. And, I hatched a 96% Dratini, with 400+ candies, waiting for the community day evolution. Based on the consensus here, I'll wait for a better Bagon.
