Question for Niantic
When I tap on the face icon on the main screen, and then go to the gyms page, 99 times out of 100 it's to see what gyms I'm currently defending. I suspect this is the case for most people. So could Niantic set things so that when I call up this screen, the previous screen is the default, or that the defending screen is the default. Would make the game play a bit easier and smoother.
(Yes, I know they don't officially follow this group. Just want to get it out here anyway.)

I think it would make sense that the gym badge screen remembers your sorting option. They already have this feature in the pokestorage so frankly I don't get why it's missing from the badge screen. I check my defended gyms often, but equally often I'm sorting by points to see my highest silver gyms.
They need to go further than that & every gym on your list should show if there's a raid currently on it, whether you have a defender on there or not. I would raid far more often if I knew where they were BEFORE I left the house. Surely can't be that hard to implement, EX raids show up on your list & would save me a hell of alot of petrol!
EVERYTHING involving Gyms and Raids should be done through the Badge screen and there should be a shortcut to the badge screen on the map.
Berry Feeding, checking Gym control, searching for Raids, Raid Egg and Raid Boss timers, with sorting options for whatever you are trying to do..right from the badge screen.
The way remote gym and raid interaction (or lack thereof) is implemented in the game currently is embarassingly stupid and Niantic should be ashamed.
