Pokémon GO weather rant as a meteorologist

I've been traveling and experienced in real life: sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, snow, windy. In Pokémon GO, however, I never saw Cloudy and Windy, and when there was Snow in the game and in reality, it did not spawn any Ice and Metal types, and soon enough Extreme was active. I've seen Extreme in clear or partly cloudy, freezing conditions and I traveled 20 km by train to a place with identical weather and the Extreme disappeared.

Currently I am siting under 8/8 Altostratus in northeastern Spain which is a solid cloud cover, yet it is perfectly Sunny/Clear in the game. There is no way a forecaster would predict sunny conditions with so much cloudiness in the region on satellite images.

Something tells me they either fake the weather because they do not have real-time input, or their input is a very bad substitute for actual weather conditions.

I've noticed this as well. This morning it was cloudy but the ground was wet so it just rained and in the game it showed rainy which is fine for me i don't expect the game to be 100% accurate it's close enough but 30 minutes later its saying "clear" when we still have full overcast of clouds. like.. bruh...

Your comment is correct. However the blind lovers of Go defend it with *It's all based on the weather forecast!*

The weather feature is one of the few interesting things Niantic have added to the game, but lets not pretend it's accurate!

I haven't seen anyone defending the inaccuracy of the weather. Let's not pretend like everyone that are still playing this game (which you are too good for and can't believe people waste so much time on) are sheeple.

I see, so you have been wasting your time on this game (how else would you know)?

Even the radar isn't accurate much of the time, so how could a game covering most the world be. However, according to my observations it has been reasonably close.

Can't see 50m in front of me but apparently it's partly cloudy. Never seen fog or windy conditions.

I did get windy once and no dragon types spawned. I get mostly extreme conditions anyway

It only follows the "Daily" section of the forecast in your ios or android and follows it the entire day REGARDLESS of how the weather changes. Also if it sees the slightest extreme weather warning it hangs an extreme weather warning. So yes, it's not accurate.

That's not true. Mine has bounced back and forth between sunny and cloudy.

Frankly the forecast in my area is seldom accurate anyway so this is nothing new for me.

I'm in sunny So Cal, and the weather has been pretty much spot on. But, it's always sunny here so I guess that's not saying much. We did have some wind recently. I went to an area where I can usually catch 1 or maybe 2 dratini if I'm lucky thinking dragon and flying should be spawning like crazy. Not 1 dratini.

That's why the weather reporters look the way they do there. The weather itself is not very interesting.

I may as well gripe. I'm okay with the weather, but while it's cloudy I'm supposed to see fairy, fighting, and poison. I haven't seen anything other than poison and the occasional Jigglypuff.

I'm really glad Niantic is straightening me out on weather. Apparently this means sunny thank you Niantic now i know

Tonight rain started falling in the game, also some in real life here in northeastern Spain, but unfortunately the status never changed from Partly Cloudy to Rainy. Now, the wet streets combined with near zero temperatures are probably what triggers the current Extreme status.
