Pokeball Capture Animation

Most of the times when I succesfully capture a Pokemon it shows some stars exploding out of the ball.
Sometimes, however, the stars seem to seep out of the ball in a stream and go to the upper left corner.
Does this have any relevance/importance or is this just random?

That’s a critical catch and is totally random.

Is there any reason for having the critical catch animation? You don't get any kind of bonus or anything for a critical catch. What's the point?

It's a very small chance that the mon gets caught no matter what. The game basically forgoes all the normal math on catching if RNG decides it's a critical.
